Security Advisory - Weak Encryption Algorithm Vulnerability in Huawei Servers

  • SA No:huawei-sa-20160824-02-server
  • Initial Release Date: Aug 24, 2016
  • Last Release Date: Aug 24, 2016

Some Huawei servers have a weak encryption algorithm vulnerability in the iBMC (Intelligent Baseboard Management Controller). The software provide an option for users to select SSL encryption algorithms. If an insecure encryption algorithm is selected, an attacker may decrypt encrypted data, causing information leaks. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-07019)

This vulnerability has been assigned Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-6899.

Huawei has released software updates to fix these vulnerabilities. This advisory is available at the following link:

Successful exploit could allow an attacker to decrypt encrypted data, causing information leaks.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 4.3 (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:N/A:N)

Temporal Score: 3.6 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

1. Prerequisite:

The attacker has access to the network of the affected devices.

2. Attacking procedure:

The servers provide an option for users to select SSL encryption algorithms. If a user selects an insecure encryption algorithm, an attacker can decrypt encrypted data, causing information leaks.
