PLAY and Huawei Implement Innovative RAN-Terminal Coordination to Deliver Ubiquitous and Superior Mobile Video Experience

Apr 23, 2018

[Warsaw, Poland, April 23, 2018] PLAY and Huawei announced that they have jointly implemented innovative RAN-terminal coordination to improve the user-perceived rate of mobile video services by 50% in weak coverage scenarios. Huawei's latest LTE solution, PHOENIX 13.1, and smartphones with a corresponding software version were used to test the function on PLAY's commercial LTE network. The collaboration highlights the benefits of joint innovation regarding RAN-terminal coordination and the two parties' dedication to improve the user experience. Thanks to the collective efforts of the two parties, the technology will be commercialized in the near future to enhance the experience guarantee for mobile video across the industry and deliver a ubiquitous and superior mobile video experience.

As video emerges as a more significant component of people's lives, video traffic on the internet has increased by four times over the past five years. Mobile video is growing increasingly popular as a new trend in video services, and operator networks will play an important role as a carrier of mobile video services. According to the telecoms research group Analysys Mason, 23% of mobile video services are currently carried by mobile operator networks. PLAY and Huawei will use an innovative technology to fulfill this market requirement, considerably improving the video transmission rate and user experience for weak coverage areas.

During video playback, the transmit power of a mobile phone is much lower than that of a base station. Sometimes the feedback data transmitted by a mobile phone may not reach the base station in time, which slows video stream transmission or causes video playback interruptions. PLAY and Huawei's innovative solution on both the RAN and terminal sides lowers the required uplink signal strength and increases the video playback success rate and playback rate.

Jorgen Bang Jensen, CEO of PLAY, said, "P4, market leader in Poland, is pleased to be the test partner of Huawei, the global leader of the LTE network market, and thereby be at the forefront of the technical evolution for the benefit of our customers."

Veni Shone, President of Huawei's LTE Product Line, said, "As mobile networks become more widely used, we need to think about how to deliver a consistent user experience through technological innovation, continuously improve network coverage, and provide high-quality services. The verified accelerated video solution is part of Huawei's SingleRAN Pro solution and is dedicated to legacy weak coverage scenarios. This solution helps operators improve the user experience. With an aim to deliver a network-wide consistent user experience, we and industry partners will use the SingleRAN Pro solution to continuously pursue technological innovation in terms of RAN-terminal coordination towards the final objective of deploying a basic LTE network and ushering in the full-service era."

Full-Service Basic LTE Network

Driven by customer requirements, Huawei's full-service basic LTE network focuses on providing both business and technological support for operators to achieve further business success. Huawei will use the SingleRAN Pro solution to evolve LTE networks, deliver ubiquitous full-service experience, and collaborate with industry partners to develop new services and usher in the full-service era.
