Excel in Operation Transformation

Managed Mobile & Fixed Converged Operation
A key part of entire E2E managed services portfolio is operations convergence addressed in the fixed and mobile domains. John Anthony Crossley from Huawei talks to you about how to realize that with higher efficiency and reduced cost.

Why operation transformation?

Smartphones and tablets have revolutionized the industry, driving massive data growth and the rapid development of mobile broadband networks (MBB). To ensure the best experience for their end users, operators need to improve their network and service quality.

The rapid pace of technology evolution has added more complications for operators who need to cater for different technologies such as 2G/3G and LTE, fixed and mobile, All-IP, and MBB/FBB convergence. With this complex and ever expanding networks, operators are facing different challenges such as how to better manage complex networks, improve operation efficiency and reduce OPEX.

However, their revenues have not grown significantly though operators have made heavy investment to build networks to handle growing data traffic. In fact, the traditional business model is being affected by the growing popularity of OTT services. Data traffic and revenue are not growing at the same pace.

In addition, the massive data and voice traffic burst that are generated during key events such as music concerts, trade fairs and sport events bring huge pressure on network security and operation.

With this growing complexity of their business operational environment, operators need to shift their focus to improving operational efficiency, service quality and customer experience while providing enough network coverage and capacity. Effective operational transformation solutions are therefore required.

Challenges of operational transformation

Operators are facing challenges on network, service and business while executing operational transformation:

  • How to optimize operation and innovate on operational model on organization, processes and platforms so that smooth transition on technology evolution, network quality improvement, operational efficiency and cost reduction can be achieved?
  • With the growing use of smartphones and tablets and many different types of services running on the network, how to guarantee service quality for best end-user experience and improve customer loyalty?
  • With competition from OTT players, how to transform business operation, value-chain management, and partner management so that revenues can be improved?

Transformation towards operational excellence

The 3 main focus areas to excel in operational transformation are network & IT management, service quality management and business support management.

Network & IT management

  • Standardization and consolidation: Improves service SLA and realizes centralized operation by integrating organization, resources, platforms and tools with the support of standardized operation processes, process KPI measurement and management;
  • Convergence: Realizes IT/CT convergence and fixed &mobile convergence operations by consolidating organization, resources, platforms and tools with the support of best practices convergence operation on mobile, fixed and IT;
  • End to end capacity management and planning: Caters for the growing needs on data network capacity by integrating business needs analysis, network resources planning, supply chain management and network performance management and optimizing the end of end life cycle management from planning, design to operation;
  • Proactive maintenance: Realizes fast and accurate problem solving by proactive network monitoring with the support of innovation on methodology, processes and tools;
  • OSS tools innovation: Automates operation by integrating business processes on OSS, innovating on work force management system, site facility management system, IP network demarcation system and handheld operation and maintenance system;
  • Key events and corporate customer network assurance: Assures network quality by analyzing voice and data models of key events (such as music concerts, trade fairs and sport events) and corporate customers.

Service quality management

It assures service quality and end-user experience by shifting from network-centric to service-centric operation, and unifying different departments such as network, sales and marketing for quick service problem solving through transforming from network KPI to service KQI management, and setting up service operation center (SOC) from the existing network operation center (NOC) that has the capabilities such as end to end service quality monitoring and operation and “per service per user” problem demarcation.

Business operation support

It helps increase revenue and reduce revenue leakage via transforming business operation support through continuous improvement on VAS and BSS operation such as value chain consolidation, content/service partner management supported by an open and innovative business and application platform and processes.
