Security Advisory - Memory Leak Vulnerability in Some Huawei Products

  • SA No:huawei-sa-20160608-01-mpls
  • Initial Release Date: 2016-06-08
  • Last Release Date: 2016-11-16

Some Huawei products have a memory leak vulnerability. When the packet processing module of the device processes abnormal Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) packets sent by attackers, the module repeatedly applies for memory, resulting in memory exhaustion in persistent attacks. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-03049)

This vulnerability has been assigned Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-8797.

Huawei has released software updates to fix these vulnerabilities. This advisory is available at the following link:

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to cause memory leak.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 5.0 (AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:P)

Temporal Score: 4.1 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

1. Prerequisite:

The attacker gains access to the network where the device resides;

2. Attacking procedure:

The attacker sends abnormal MPLS packets to the device. When the device processes such packets, the device repeatedly applies for memory, resulting in a memory exhaustion.

Customers should contact Huawei TAC (Huawei Technical Assistance Center) to request the upgrades. For TAC contact information, please refer to Huawei worldwide website at http://www.huawei.com/en/psirt/report-vulnerabilities.
