Four OS Vendors Release openEuler-powered Commercial Editions

Mar 28, 2020

[Shenzhen, China, March 27, 2020] The openEuler community has released its first Long-Term Support (LTS) edition, the openEuler 20.03 LTS, at the Huawei Developer Conference 2020 (Cloud). At the same time, Huawei has joined with four leading OS vendors, Kylinsoft, iSoft, Uniontech, and the Institute of Software Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS), to announce commercial editions powered by openEuler. The announcement marks a new milestone for the commercial readiness of openEuler-based operating systems. openEuler, the open source, free Linux distribution platform that offers an open community for developers worldwide is now set to take the multi-core heterogeneous computing industry to the next level.

openEuler Boosts Innovation in Multi-Core Heterogeneous Computing

Huawei, as the founder and driving force of openEuler, is committed to investing in open source communities. As an open community, openEuler is a shared stronghold being built cooperatively by a growing number of global developers.

  •  On September 18, 2019, Huawei announced its OS would go open source at https://openeuler.org/en/ along with a development plan.
  •  On December 31, 2019, the openEuler source code was officially released. By March 25, the ISO had seen 5479 downloads, and received 5324 code contributions by 220 developers.
  •  On March 27, 2020, the openEuler 20.03 LTS edition was officially released in the open source community as its first LTS edition.

The openEuler community is quickly taking shape with its secretariat, technical committee, and security committee already in operation. To date, community participants have applied for and established more than 30 project teams.

openEuler LTS Signals Mass Commercial Readiness of Open Source OS

Current plans call for the openEuler community to release an LTS edition every two years and an innovative edition every six months to provide Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) management capability. openEuler is committed to an Upstream First policy to push all capabilities to the upstream open source community as quickly as possible.

Based on Huawei's technical expertise and product know-how, the openEuler 20.03 LTS edition has already demonstrated industry-leading stability and security. Building on full-stack software, it will fully unlock the power of diversified computing platforms, including:

  •  Multi-core high concurrency: The file cache management mechanism has been lock-free optimized, improving Nginx HTTP concurrency by 15%.
  •  Integrated KAE plug-in: Software/hardware collaboration drives the Kunpeng processor hardware accelerator, enabling the Kunpeng acceleration library to help improve performance by 10% to 100%.
  •  iSula lightweight container: Lightweight, fast, easy-to-use, and flexible, it slashes startup time by 35%, and drives down memory resource consumption by 68%.
  •  openEuler community build of OpenJDK: Improves performance by 20% through optimization of memory management and compilation.
  •  A-Tune: Provides intelligent, scenario-specific auto-tuning to improve system tuning efficiency by 30%.
  •  Broad architecture support: Compatible with the architectures of processors such as Kunpeng and x86, the OS will support additional processor architectures in the future.

Four OS Vendors Release Commercial Editions, Enrich Computing Ecosystem

Leading vendors including Kylinsoft, iSoft, Uniontech, and ISCAS actively supporting the openEuler community, have taken the lead to release commercial editions.

  •  Kylinsoft’s Kylin Server OS based on openEuler kernels is designed for multi-core heterogeneous computing scenarios, and targets processing for mission-critical services and data loads.
  •  iSoft has launched the iSoft Server OS V5.1 for Kunpeng, the first commercial release based on openEuler. iSoft aims to support the openEuler community to build openEuler as a leading global community.
  •  Uniontech released deepinEuler V1.0, a Kunpeng-based OS that supports all new features of the Kunpeng processor to deliver compelling performance. Uniontech plans ongoing upgrades of deepinEuler to enhance the Kunpeng ecosystem, and drive adoption of deepinEuler in a growing range of scenarios.
  •  ISCAS released its EulixOS Server 1.0 to launch an open source software supply lightening program aimed at boosting the capabilities and sustainability of the openEuler community.

openEuler to Support OS Vendors both on Technology and Service Fronts

The openEuler community is committed to training, improving developers’ capabilities, and providing certification of OS vendors and developers to enhance skills and services. The openEuler technical summit is planned for April to expand and deepen the community’s technical communications. Planning for openEuler 20.09 is also well underway.

openEuler is not only an open source and free Linux distribution platform, but also an innovation platform. It encourages everyone to propose new ideas, practices and solutions, together driving a growing and prosperous application ecosystem.
