Huawei Launches Intelligent Defined Network Leading the Way to Next-Generation Network Transformation

Apr 17, 2017

[Paris, France, April 17, 2017] Huawei released the framework and technical roadmap of Intelligent Defined Network (IDN), an SDN-based open enabler platform which can intelligently optimize network configuration and management, at the MPLS + SDN + NFV 2017 World Congress in Paris, France, associated with ETSI's Next Generation Protocols Industry Specification Group (NGP ISG). With the core of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, IDN potentially plays an important role in network operation, such as automatic decision-making, resource scheduling and other various scenarios based on the deeply understanding of network and content.

In recent years, evolution towards SDN and NFV has become a predominant trend for networks. The centralized architecture and programmable devices have provided sufficient conditions for high-level automatic controlling and management. Along with the increase of data scale, network management requires more intelligent elements to replace the manual labor in data analysis and resource usage in order to automate the deployment of new policies. Different to the programmable-oriented of SDN/NFV, the IDN focuses on the question of automatic decision in network management. Huawei plans to construct a “brain system” above the SDN architecture and then build the intelligent decision support mechanism for the entire network.

Huawei has accumulated solid experience in communication services and network measurement for dozens of years. Based on the insight of intelligent algorithms and network control technology the IDN project has explored a number of significant scenarios including proactive resource allocation, service experience optimization and fine-grained flow controlling. The ML algorithms and AI based solution for network analysis and decision is an important step towards network intelligence. It is potentially expected that the application of ML and AI technologies in the network area will potentially become a dominant trend in the future.

The MPLS + SDN + NFV World Congress is the premier network technology event in 2017. The theme of the 2017 congress was "From Management to Orchestration". Over 1500 experts from top level standardization organizations, service providers, and vendors were present. The leading industry companies, such as Huawei, Cisco, Juniper, AT&T, Google, Microsoft, NEC, and Intel launched their latest products and prototypes at this conference.
