Huawei selected by Telstra for LTE trials

2010.03.18

Sydney, 18 March, 2010: Huawei is pleased to announce it has been selected by Telstra to trialLong Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technology.

“This is a great opportunity for Huawei to showcase its next-generation LTE solution in Australia,” said Huawei Australia CTO Peter Rossi. “Australians are some of the most data-hungry mobile users in the world, and in coming years LTE will be able to offer mobile data speeds comparable to the fixed-line broadband speeds available today.”

Telstra and Huawei will conduct the LTE trial in Victoria. Trials are expected to begin in May and will run for three to six months.

“Huawei is excited to be working with Telstra on this LTE trial, having already signed 9 commercial contracts and carried out over 60 LTE trials with leading operators around the globe,” Mr Rossi said. “Business users and consumers alike have embraced existing mobile data offerings using HSPA, or 3G, technology. LTE is a true 4G service, and is technically capable of more than quadrupling the mobile broadband speeds currently available.”

The agreement will see Huawei supply Telstra with the necessary base station equipment, as well as core network equipment and LTE terminals to demonstrate Huawei’s end-to-end LTE capability. More than 20 Huawei staff will work with Telstra to complete the trial.

“Live trials of Huawei’s LTE solution have shown peak download speeds of more than 150Mbps, allowing for streaming high-definition video, video and voice calls, and lightning-fast internet browsing on the go,” Mr Rossi said.

In January 2009, Huawei signed the world’s first LTE commercial contract with TeliaSonera to deploy an LTE network in Oslo, Norway. Under the agreement, Huawei will provide an end-to-end LTE solution including base stations, core network and OSS (Operating Support Systems). Huawei also provides services including network design, implementation, systems integration and support.
