Introduction and Challenges
Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution is a significant and agile IoT solution that integrates LED lamps with smart lighting polices. Huawei's Connected City Lighting Solution connects street lamps to the IoT using a GIS-based management system. The solution provides municipal managers with status information on each lamp on any given street and enables precise control of on/off switches and the brightness of individual lamps, allowing on-demand lighting and up to 80% reduction in energy consumption.
With Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution, each street lamp is equipped with a plug-and-play controller. Controllers and agile IoT gateways form a mesh network that features auto-networking and self-recovery. Key requirements are now the network scale and integration of multi-vendor devices.
At present, the network scale of a short-distance mesh network in the industry ranges from dozens of nodes to two or three hundred nodes. The network scale needs to be expanded to support a large number of street lamps in the whole city. In addition, the network must guarantee reliable connections and low-latency data transmission to meet the requirements of reducing overall operating expense (OPEX) and enhancing street lamp management
Integration of multi-vendor devices
An OS featuring a real-time multi-task framework is required to simplify task collection and control, accelerate the integration of lamp applications, and seamlessly migrate applications to new processors through standard APIs.
Huawei LiteOS-assisted Connected City Lighting Solution
Huawei LiteOS provides a lightweight kernel and connectivity engine that supports protocol stacks for large-scale networks and allows various types of connectivity.
● Various protocols：
Huawei LiteOS supports short-distance connection based on protocols such as 6LoWPAN and ZigBee, and long-distance connection based on technologies such as NB-IoT and LTE. Unified open APIs are provided to flexibly achieve lamp data collection and street lamp control in the large-scale network and complex environment, regardless of the bottom data transmission protocols.
● Large-scale coverage：
Huawei LiteOS provides protocol stacks to achieve a mesh network with relatively 5 times network scale of those in the industry, allowing more efficient control of large-scale street lamps.

Huawei LiteOS has been integrated to numerous products and commercialized on a large scale, experience which has been incorporated in the Huawei LiteOS-assisted Connected City Lighting Solution. The implementation of simplified task collection and control based on real-time multi-task framework accelerates lamp application integration, and seamlessly migrates lamps to new processors for vendors. This allows for faster launch and promotion of new products.
