Christian Salvatore
Researcher @ National Research Council ,Forbes 30 Under 30 2017 (Science & Healthcare)
Christian Salvatore, 31, has a master’s degree in Physics (110 cum laude) and a Ph.D. in Physics, obtained at the University of Milan-Bicocca.
During his training, he developed distinctive skills in the field of artificial intelligence and its application to health, with the aim of developing new products and services to improve the quality of human life. Christian's challenge is to use the intelligence and ability of computers to process biomedical data of different nature and complexity with the aim of identifying new disease biomarkers, integrating a quantity of biomedical data such that a physician -albeit expert- would not be able to synthesize. For this purpose, Christian works on the development of intelligent algorithms able to learn from biomedical data key relationships for the understanding of diseases, and to use this information to predict the diagnosis or progression of pathologies, with a focus on neurodegenerative, psychiatric or stress-related diseases.
With this approach, Christian has achieved important results, which allowed him to win important prizes and awards at national and international level, including:
  · January 2017 – selected among over 15,000 candidates throughout Europe as the only Italian researcher – he was listed in the prestigious club of the thirty most influential European under 30 in the field of Science and Health according to The Forbes magazine (FORBES 30 UNDER 30 Award), https://www.forbes.com/profile/christian-salvatore/).
  · In May 2017 he won the Scientific Prize of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Italian National Research Council (DSB-CNR Biological and Biomedical Imaging Award, http://bit.ly/dsb-salvatore).
  · In June 2017 he won the "Youth in Action for Sustainable Development Goals" Award (http://bit.ly/yia-salvatore), a call for ideas promoted by the Italian Accenture Foundation, the Eni Enrico Mattei Foundation and the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation, addressed to young under 30 for the best project able to facilitate the achievement of the targets adopted by 193 UN member countries, which outline the actions to be taken in favor of sustainable development in the European Agenda 2030 (also awarded by the Bracco Foundation). Christian received this important award at the Chamber of Deputies, in the presence of the President of the Council, Paolo Gentiloni Silveri, the President of the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities, Gaetano Manfredi and other important authorities.
  · In September 2017 he was one of the three winners of the Peres Heritage Initiative Award (http://bit.ly/PHI-salvatore, http://bit.ly/PHI-CNR-salvatore), an important prize assigned by the Peres Center for Peace & Innovation in partnership with The European House – Ambrosetti and dedicated to young social innovators, entrepreneurs, activists or researchers who distinguished themselves for excellent results in the fields consistent with the values promoted by Shimon Peres: pursuit of peace, green and circular economy, sustainability, inclusive business models, non-profit, social innovation, technological and scientific development, integration, new challenges in education. Christian was hosted as a guest at the European House - Ambrosetti, (Villa d'Este, Cernobbio), where he had the opportunity to illustrate his research project during the gala dinner on Saturday, September 2, at the annual forum “Intelligence of the World, Europe, Italy”, (1-3 September 2017), an international event gathering -since 1975- Heads of States and Governments, leading representatives of international institutions, Ministers, Nobel prizes, entrepreneurs, managers and experts to discuss themes of major impact for the global economy and society as a whole.
  · Luit d'Oro Civic Merit City of Nova Milanese 2017, assigned by the Municipality of Nova Milanese "for the prestigious national and international results in scientific research".
  · Angelo Marai Prize 2017 (5th edition), awarded by ASIS (Association of Health Industry Studies) and Carlo Erba Foundation to a PhD student who during his/her Ph.D. period has carried out particularly innovative researches that may constitute a basis of future programs in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.
The experience in research and development gained during this period, led Christian to found the innovative start-up "DeepTrace Technologies" (www.deeptracetech.com), dedicated to the development, production and marketing of products, devices, software products and innovative services at high technological value (based on artificial intelligence) for improving the quality of human life, with particular reference to social and health care.
Christian also carried out teaching experience and training activities, he has been thesis advisor for the II level University Master in Adrotherapy (National Center of Oncological Adrotherapy -CNAO- and University of Pavia) and for the University of Milano-Bicocca. He also held 10 seminars and invited lessons in national and international conferences and schools. He is scientific evaluator of research projects for the Royal Society (royalsociety.org, London), Associate Editor (by invitation) of the scientific journal "Frontiers in Neuroscience", and performs the activity of scientific reviewer for international scientific journals in the field of artificial intelligence applied to medicine and bio- images, such as "Human Brain Mapping", "Journal of Neuroscience Methods", "Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience", "Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience".
Since 2013, Christian is also a research collaborator (research fellow) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), at the Institute of Molecular Bioimaging and Physiology. From the collaboration with CNR, Christian has gained experience in the participation and management of innovative research projects (since 2013 he has participated in 5 research projects of the CNR, 1 of which as Scientific Responsible).
The results of his research have been published in 20 scientific publications in international journals of recognized prestige, 9 of which in primary position (with the role of first author, shown below), for a total of 193 citations and an H index (Hirsch index) equal to 8 (the H index is a standardized index in the field of scientific research that measures the scientific impact of an author based on the number of his own publications and on the number of citations of his own publications received from other authors of the scientific community).
