The telecom industry has witnessed intense discussions over the past three years, with many new terms emerging. These include software-defined, virtualization, software-defined network (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), cloud data center, 4.5G, 5G, and ultra-broadband.
From September 15th to 17th, Huawei held 2015 Global Services Forum, under the theme of Re-architecting Infrastructure and Operations for New Growth, the two-day event brings together more than 300 guests from leading global carriers, standards organizations, open source communities, analyst institutions, partners, and media outlets. The forum this year is aiming at sharing experiences, innovations, best practices, and thought leadership to advance new growth on the journey of experience-driven re-architecting operations and ICT infrastructure. Dr. Howard Liang, Huawei Senior VP and President of Global Technical Service, delivered a keynote speech at the forum.
Telecommunication service providers have unique challenges and opportunities to transform from network-centric, utility-like business models that limit growth, to new business models that increase revenue by operating with the flexibility of a converged ICT (Information and Communications Technology) infrastructure that enables mission-critical cloud services for enterprises and new digital services. Additionally, they can use a wide array of network and data center transformation technologies to make this transition while increasing profitability.
As we transform into the digital economy, the role of the Data Center has evolved from just being a container holding its individual assets to being a business and service driver that enables the ecosystems of the carrier's data centers. It acts logically as one enabling service that is flexible, agile and software defined supporting the ROADS (Real-Time, On-Demand, All-Online, Do It Yourself and Social) framework. The data center should be the strategic focal point and the foundation of the Carriers ICT transformation in the next generation of services that enables the digital economy.
NFV has become a hot topic in both the IT and CT industries. By enabling software-hardware decoupling and hardware generalization, NFV helps carriers to rapidly release new services while reducing CAPEX and OPEX. However, NFV transformation does not happen overnight, being that it is fraught with many challenges, the most critical being the very fact that NFV transformation entails a multi-vendor integration. Huawei provides its NFV prime integration service to help carriers achieve business success through NFV transformation.
