One Step Away from Scoring 4 Points on Mobile vMOS

Based on the analysis on the mobile vMOS statistics (April 1, 2015 to July 22, 2015) from MBB explorer, Huawei mLAB has discovered the following key findings:

• Mobile vMOS scores in developed areas are close to 4. Taking an extra step to support 2K videos can obtain a score higher than 4.

• The vMOS score (for 1080p HPD) on the 4G network of operator M in city N of country C is 0.1 point lower than other operators' networks. The initial buffering and video freeze are the major contributors.

• In the vMOS score ranking (for 720p HPD) for 4G networks in country C, operator M did not make it into Top 3. The major reason is that the score related to initial buffering is low.

• In the vMOS score ranking (for 720p HPD) for 4G networks of operator M in country C, networks in major big cities have ranked high. There is much room for improvement in terms of initial buffering in most cities.

• In the vMOS score ranking (for 1080p DASH) for 4G networks around the world, operator Z in Riyadh of Saudi Arabia has earned a low score related to video freeze.

• According to the vMOS statistics (for 1080p DASH) for 4G networks in Korea, the three major operators provide similar video experiences and have a high score in terms of video freeze.

• In general, the initial buffering score is directly proportional to the initial buffering rate in the downlink.

• In most cases, the initial buffering score is directly proportional to the signal strength.
