YouTube Video Resolution Selection Analysis

1. YouTube Video Playback Behavior on Different Platforms

Video resolution can be selected using two methods on a PC-installed Chrome web browser, Android-based client, and iOS-based client (with Wi-Fi network coverage available): adaptive selection and manual selection. Adaptive selection is used by default. If manual selection is used, adaptive selection becomes invalid, and the video resolution no longer changes adaptively according to network conditions. On an iOS-based client (with mobile network coverage available) or Android-based Chrome web browser, only adaptive selection is allowed. Users cannot perceive the adaptive changes in video codec bit rate or check the resolution of the current video source.

iOS-based YouTube client: The highest video resolution is 720p for both adaptive selection and manual selection.

Android-based YouTube client: The highest video resolution is 2K for both adaptive selection and manual selection if the UE supports 2K videos.

PC-installed Chrome web browser for YouTube: Adaptive selection and manual selection are both supported. The highest video resolution for manual selection is 8K, whereas that for adaptive selection is unknown (due to laboratory bandwidth limitations).

2. Impact of Video-Resolution Selection Method (Adaptive or Manual) on vMOS

If adaptive selection is used, the video resolution and codec bit rate change along with network jitter based on network conditions, and the vMOS fluctuates significantly in real time. If manual selection is used, the video resolution does not change based on network conditions, and the vMOS changes slightly depending on the proportion of video frame freeze duration.

The following figure shows the vMOS with adaptive selection enabled.

The following figure shows the vMOS with manual selection enabled.

3. Method of Resolution Verification Available by YouTube Video Sources

Step 1: Click anywhere on the current image of the video you are watching. Then, click in the upper right area.

Step 2: Click

Step 3: View the list of allowed video resolutions, with the current video resolution selected.

4. Method for Searching 2K and 4K YouTube Video Sources

Step 1: Click on the YouTube home page.

Step 2: Type 4k video test in the displayed search text box.

Step 3: View the list of displayed video sources, most of which support the 2K resolution.
