StorySign: Opening a New Chapter for Deaf Children
Changing the Story of Deaf Literacy
There are 32 million deaf children in the world, many of whom struggle to read. Deaf children don't learn to read phonetically, which means that they can struggle to match words with sounds.
To help open up the world of books to deaf children and change the story of deaf literacy, we created StorySign using the positive power of artificial intelligence.
Focusing on supporting families with deaf children up to 6 years old, StorySign uses innovative mobile AI technology to translate popular children's books into sign language. The app scans the words of selected, popular children's books, instantly translating them into sign language using our friendly signing avatar, Star.

In Partnership with the Community
StorySign was developed in close partnership with publishing partner Penguin Random House and the international deaf community, including deaf schools, 15+ (inter)national deaf associations, and the European Union of the Deaf (EUD).
Technology for All
StorySign is available for free worldwide and can be downloaded from Huawei AppGallery, Google Play Store, and Apple App Store. The 71 different children's books on the app are available in 15 sign languages, including British Sign Language, American Sign Language, Auslan, Libras, Spanish Sign Language, and French Sign Language.
