Low-carbon Huawei campus in Johannesburg: Powered by a rooftop PV system and a BESS
Coal has long accounted for the lion's share of South Africa's electricity mix. To help advance the country's decarbonization and make our own operations greener, we deployed a rooftop PV system on our Johannesburg campus, significantly reducing the campus's reliance on coal-fired power and cutting its carbon emissions. The project also involved deploying a battery energy storage system (BESS) to store surplus electricity generated by the PV system and release it as needed. This system boosts energy utilization and helps ensure a stable power supply.
In 2025, the rooftop PV system generated more than 600,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to cutting CO2 emissions by 595 metric tons, powering the campus's green operations. This project showcased our sustained investment in and commitment to green technology and sustainable operations.
The PV + BESS solution maximizes the environmental benefits of renewable energy while significantly boosting the campus's operational resilience in complex energy conditions
