  • Ken Hu

    Deputy Chairman and Rotating CEO Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

    Mr. Ken (Houkun) Hu is Deputy Chairman of Huawei’s Board of Directors. He also serves as Chairman of Huawei USA. With over 20 years of experience in the telecoms industry, Mr. Hu is integral to the strategic direction of the company and instrumental to Huawei's efforts to expand its business in global markets.

    As part of his role as Deputy Chairman, Mr. Hu is head of Huawei’s Human Resources Committee and is responsible for the company’s leadership and organizational development. He is also the head of the company's Global Cyber Security Committee, which oversees the development of Huawei's global cyber security strategies and the establishment of an end-to-end cyber security assurance system.

    Mr. Hu joined the company in 1990, when Huawei was in its infancy. Since then, he has helped Huawei establish a global sales and service network that introduces its innovative products and solutions to the world's leading operators. He also played a key role in the company's management transformation that has facilitated Huawei's globalization. Prior to his current role, Mr. Hu has held several senior positions within the company, including Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer, Chief Sales and Service Officer, President of Global Sales, Regional President of Huawei Latin America, and President of Huawei's Chinese market.

    Mr. Hu is actively involved in activities that promote the development of humanity and social progress through technological innovation. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Telecom Industry Steering Committee and a member of APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC). 

    Mr. Hu holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

  • Rt Hon. the Lord Willetts

    Executive Chair, Resolution Foundation and Visiting Professor at King’s College London

    The Rt Hon. Lord David Willetts is the Executive Chair of the Resolution Foundation. He served as the Member of Parliament for Havant (1992-2015), as Minister for Universities and Science (2010-2014) and previously worked at HM Treasury and the No. 10 Policy Unit.

    Lord Willetts is a visiting Professor at King’s College London, Governor of the Ditchley Foundation, Chair of the British Science Association and a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He is an Honorary Fellow of Nuffield College Oxford.

    Lord Willetts has written widely on economic and social policy. His book ‘The Pinch’ was published in 2010. He has just completed a book on universities which will be published by Oxford University Press in November.

  • Sir Timothy O'Shea

    Principal, University of Edinburgh

    Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea FRSE, Principal of the University of Edinburgh.  A computer scientist, he is a graduate of the Universities of Sussex and Leeds. He became Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in 2002.

    Professor O’Shea is Chair of: the Scottish Institute for Enterprise; the Board of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and Newbattle Abbey College Trust. He is Convener of the Scottish Government's Further and Higher Education Sector Oversight Board for Information and Communications Technology. He holds honorary degrees from Heriot Watt University, the University of Strathclyde, McGill University and Saint Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences.

    Professor O’Shea was awarded a Knighthood in the Queen’s 2008 New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his services to higher education.

  • Vincent Pang

    President of Huawei’s Western European Region, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

    Mr Vincent (Bo) Pang is the President of Huawei’s Western European Region. In this role, he is responsible for the overall business development and management in this region, including sales, marketing, and business operations.

    Prior to this new appointment, he served as Huawei’s President of Global Sales and Key Accounts Department, overseeing global sales, orders and payment targets, analysing industrial policy, developing customer and competition strategies, as well as managing and developing global account organisations, coordinating cross-regional operations and building global organisational relationships.

    Mr Pang joined Huawei after graduating from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1999 and has held several senior positions within the company including Vice-President of the Western European Region, President of the Vodafone Global Account, member of the Carrier Network BG EMT, member of the Strategy & Development Committee.

  • Prof. Ramjee Prasad

    Knight of the Order of Dannebrog, Fellow of the IEEE, IET, IETE, and WWRF

    Dr. Ramjee Prasad is a Professor of Future Technologies for Business Ecosystem Innovation (FT4BI) in the Department of Business Development and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark. He is the Founder President of the CTIF Global Capsule (CGC). He is also the Founder Chairman of the Global ICT Standardisation Forum for India, established in 2009. GISFI has the purpose of increasing of the collaboration between European, Indian, Japanese, North-American and other worldwide standardization activities in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and related application areas.  

    He has been honored by the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy as a Distinguished Professor of the Department of Clinical Sciences and Translational Medicine on March 15, 2016. He is Honorary Professor of University of Cape Town, South Africa, and University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

    He has received Ridderkorset af Dannebrogordenen (Knight of the Dannebrog) in 2010 from the Danish Queen for the internationalization of top-class telecommunication research and education.

    He has received several international awards such as: IEEE Communications Society Wireless Communications Technical Committee Recognition Award in 2003 for making contribution in the field of “Personal, Wireless and Mobile Systems and Networks”, Telenor's Research Award in 2005 for impressive merits, both academic and organizational within the field of wireless and personal communication,  2014 IEEE AESS Outstanding Organizational Leadership Award for: “Organizational Leadership in developing and globalizing the CTIF (Center for TeleInFrastruktur) Research Network”, and so on. 

    He has been Project Coordinator of several EC projects namely, MAGNET, MAGNET Beyond, eWALL and so on.

    He has published more than 30 books, 1000 plus journal and conference publications, more than 15 patents, over 100 PhD Graduates and larger number of Masters (over 250). Several of his students are today worldwide telecommunication leaders themselves.

  • Dr. Egon Schulz

    5G IA Board Member

    Dr. Schulz has more than 30 years experience in Mobile Communication Services, Research & Innovation, Product and Solution Creation Processes: Terminal & Infrastructure, Spectrum, Standardization, Prototyping, National and International Collaboration and Product oriented Research (PoR).

    In 2009 Dr. Schulz joined the Huawei European Research Centre (ERC) as Director of Wireless Innovation. Dr. Schulz is committed to the Board of 5G Infrastructure Association. He is actively engaged (Board Member) in the strategic actions of the 5G IA.

    His current working area is 5G and is strong engaged in the European 5G PPP Research Projects. He is Huawei’s representative in the Steering Board of European technology Platform (ETP) Networld2020 and Vice-Chair of the steering Board. In the worldwide Association 5GAA he is Huawei’s alternate representative in the 5GAA Board. 

    Dr. Egon Schulz received his diploma degree in theoretical physics from the University of Siegen, Germany, in 1982 and his Doktor degree from the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1988. From 1982 to 1988, he was employed as a research assistant for communication systems. 

    In 1988 he joined the Mobile Network Division at Siemens AG, Munich. He was a member of the ETSI standardization group for the GSM Half Rate Speech Codec. From 1992 to 1993 he was a professor of telecommunication at University of Applied Sciences of Darmstadt, Germany. In 1993 was a director for System Engineering for radio in the local loop and for wireless private branch exchange systems based on DECT and WB-CDMA. From 1998 he was involved in the UMTS standardization.

    Since 2000 he has been serving as director for future radio concepts. Dr. Schulz has published numerous conference papers. In 2002 he received the Best Paper Award of the ICCCAS 2002, Chengdu. 

    He was involved in numerous national BMBF (e.g. Fleetnet – Internet on the Road) and EU research projects for the designing of future mobile communication networks. He was the project leader of the Sino-German Project Joint Research B3G (JRB3G) between German and Chinese Research Institutes funded by Siemens AG. Dr. Schulz participated in the 863 (MOST) funded research projects FuTURE and FuTURE+. 

    In 2005, he was elected as vice chairman of the FuTURE Forum in China. He had a strong engagement in research and prototyping for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-advanced (LTE-A) and was involved in the first realtime MIMO-OFDM 1 Gbit/s transmission, Multi-Hop field trial with 360 Mbit/s and LTE field trial.

    His interest is 5G and he and his team is strong engaged in the European 5G PPP Research Projects for Phase 1 and Phase 2 for designing, validation and verification of 5G system proposals additional he is a member of the 5G IA Working Group for Developing the European Trial Roadmap in conjunction with the EC 5G Action Plan .

  • Dr. David Knott

    David is an experienced IT leader, architect and strategist with over 25 years experience of designing, delivering and running IT for companies in the banking, insurance, media, utilities and transportation sectors. 

    David joined HSBC in 2015, and is responsible for the architecture and design of technology across the organisation. 

    His focus is on making our architecture simpler, safer and easier to use, while getting maximum value from new technologies. 

    David holds a PhD in Philosophy, specialising in Ethics, and is closely following the rapidly emerging field of AI Ethics.

  • DR. Michael Frank

    Director Development & Engineering, Leica Camera AG

    Michael is heading the development unit including Optics, Digital Imaging, Electronics, Hardware and Software for BU Photo and BU Professional.

    His unit is also responsible for the technical part of the cooperation with Huawei, which results in the successful photography feature of P and Mate series “co-engineered with Leica”.

    He leads the Max-Berek Innovation Lab GmbH, which was initiated by Dr. Kaufmann, majority owner of Leica Camera AG, and Mr. Ren, founder of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, for research on disruptive innovations on optical excellence and premium image quality.

    Prior to Leica Camera AG, Michael ran at Rohde & Schwarz as Vice President of Business Unit Radio Communications Equipment and at Siemens Communications in several technical and management positions.

    Michael is always very interested in future innovations, technology cooperation and agile development and holds an PhD in Mathematics.

  • Prof. Rahim Tafazolli

    Director, 5G Innovation Centre & Institute for Communication Systems

    Rahim Tafazolli is Professor of Mobile and Satellite Communication and was the founder of the 5G Innovation Centre in 2012 and became Director of the Institute for Communication Systems in 2010.

    He has over 25 years of experience in digital communications research and teaching. He has authored and co-authored more than 500 research publications and is regularly invited to deliver keynote talks and distinguished lectures to International conferences and workshops.

    He has also edited two books on “Technologies for the Wireless Future”, Vol.1 in 2004 and Vol.2 in 2006 published by Wiley’s. He is co-inventor of more than 30 granted patents, all in the field of digital communications.

    He is regularly invited by many governments to advise on mobile communications and on 5G technologies and is advisor and board member of many international companies, in the USA, UK, Spain, China, South Korea and Australia

  • Prof. David de Cremer

    KPMG Professor in management studies at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge

    David De Cremer is an Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Annals and has been a member on the editorial boards of, among others, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Social Influence, Social Justice Research, Leadership Quarterly. 

    He teaches at the MBA, EMBA and executive level, with a specific focus on organizational behavior, corporate social responsibility and ethics, contemporary issues in leadership, trust as a business asset, negotiations and decision making. He provided consultancy to companies like, among others, Novartis, Barclays, KPMG, AB Inbev, Solvay, IBM, Rabobank, ING, Cisco, Bayer, DSM, and Huawei.

    He has edited several academic books on the following topics: "Social psychology and economics", "Advances in the psychology of justice and affect", "Psychological perspectives on ethical behavior and decision making", "Social psychology and organizations", and "Behavioral business ethics: Shaping an emerging field". In addition, he has also written popular books on "When good people do bad things: On the psychology behind the financial crisis", "Making negotiations predictable: What science tells us?" and "The proactive leader: How to overcome procrastination and be a bold decision maker". 

    His recent work has been discussed, among others, in the Scientific American, Bloomberg News, The Economist, Forbes, The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, CBS Money Watch, and Psychology Today. He has written opinion pieces for economic newspapers and magazines (e.g. The Financial Times) and in 2009-2010 he was named the most influential economist in the Netherlands (Top 40 of economists).

  • Dr. Marcus du Sautoy

    Professor of Mathematics, University of Oxford

    Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford where he holds the prestigious Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science and is a Fellow of New College.

    Du Sautoy has received a number of awards for his work including the London Mathematical Society’s Berwick Prize for outstanding mathematical research and the Royal Society of London’s Michael Faraday Prize for ‘excellence in communicating science’. He has been awarded an OBE for his services to science and was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

    His mathematical research has covered a great many areas including group theory, number theory and model theory, but he has been equally successful in his promotion of mathematics to the general public. He has published a number of best-selling, non-academic books and appears regularly on television and radio.

  • Prof. Jon Oberlander

    Professor of Epistemics, the University of Edinburgh

    Jon Oberlander is Professor of Epistemics at the University of Edinburgh. His research is about getting computers to talk or write like people. This involves not only studying how people express themselves - face to face or online - but also building computers that can adapt themselves to communicate as individuals do. He collaborates with linguists, psychologists, computer scientists and social scientists, and has long standing interests in the uses of technology in cultural heritage and creative industries. He was founder-Director of the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance, and is now the University's Assistant Principal for Data Technology, Director of the Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation, and Co-Director of the Centre for Design Informatics. He is leading the development of the new Bayes Centre for Data Science & Technology.

  • Paul Mason

    Director, Emerging and Enabling Technologies at Innovate UK

    Paul has overarching responsibility for programmes in Emerging Technologies and Industries; in cross-cutting areas such as electronics, photonics, electrical systems, digital, space, design, and creative economy; as well as for Innovate UK’s Open Programme.

    This role follows periods as Deputy Director Research and Chief Scientific Advisor, and as Head of Development. Paul oversaw the creation of the first 10 Innovate UK sector strategies (in high value manufacturing, creative industries, biosciences, ICT, electronics photonics and electrical systems, advanced materials, energy generation and supply, financial services, medicines & healthcare, and emerging technologies and industries); the development of new Innovation Platforms in the Detection & Identification of Infectious Agents (DIIA), Sustainable Agriculture and Food (SAF IP) and Stratified Medicine (SMIP); and the first emerging technologies investments in areas such as quantum technologies, non-animal technologies and biofilms. Implementation of these programmes represents a public sector investment of over £500m.

    Before joining Innovate UK Paul worked for 25 years in the chemical industry, and in 2007 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

    Paul read Chemistry at Balliol College, Oxford and in 1984 joined Courtaulds PLC where he held roles in R&D management, coordinated Courtaulds’ technology activities in Japan, and worked as a Market Analyst in the USA. At Acordis Acetate Products he led a multi-site change management programme and was responsible for cellulose triacetate polymer sales in Europe. From sales, he moved into manufacturing, and after a brief period as Technical Manager, in 2003 became Manufacturing Manager for Acordis’ acetate plant in Coventry. He joined Innovate UK in 2007.

    Julian David is the CEO of techUK. He was appointed as the director general of Intellect in March 2012 and led its transformation to techUK in November 2013. Julian leads techUK’s 60 strong team in representing more than 900 member companies, including multi-nationals and more than 500 SMEs to ensure that the digital tech industry is at the heart of a modern society and economy in Britain.   • Jose Antonio Aranda

    Since April, he is responsible for providing technical expertise to the European region. Jose held a similar role during nearly the last 4 years in Latin America where he led different technical projects and implementations with the MNOs. In 2008-9 he was the Event Director of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (Spain). Joined GSMA in 2006 as Technical Working Group Director managing first the BARG (roaming) Group, then IWG (Interconnection) Group and more recently IREG (network) Group. Worked 8 years for Vodafone Spain in the Institutional Relations and Customer Service Departments. With a Technical Telecommunications Engineering degree, Jose began his career working in Austria and Slovakia.

  • Dr. Yuefeng Zhou

    Chief Marketing Officer, Huawei Wireless Solution

    Dr. Yuefeng Zhou is Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for Huawei’s Wireless Solution. Dr. Zhou leads marketing strategy, marketing programs, brand building and demand generation across Huawei’s portfolio of wireless network products and solutions.

    Dr. Zhou joined Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd. in 2008, and has held several senior leadership positions including Director of Mobile Innovation Center (MIC) for the Wireless Network Product Line Management Department in Europe, Chief Operation Officer for the FDD LTE Product Line, and President of Small Cell & Wi-Fi Wireless Networks. 

    Dr. Zhou has worked in the telecommunications industry for over 16 years and has extensive experience across planning, R&D, production, marketing and services. In 2000, Dr. Zhou began his career in telecoms-related R&D and before joining Huawei he worked for Fujitsu Laboratories Europe and NEC Europe.

    Dr. Zhou received his PhD degree from the University of Edinburgh in UK. He also holds the MSc and BEng degrees from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China.

  • Joe So

    CTO Industry Solutions

    Mr. Joe So is Chief Technology Officer of Industry Solutions, Enterprise Business Group, at Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. In this role, he is focused on IT, Wireless, Networks and Unified Communications & Collaborations (UC&C) products particularly for Smart and Safe City, Energy, Banking & Financial Service, Transportation, Medical and Education Solutions. He leads a team of R&D and pre-sales engineers in developing and formulating solutions for the company’s enterprise customers.

    With over 30 years of experience in the ICT field, Mr. So has a good command over the value chain: from engineering, customer satisfaction and sales support to operation, marketing and business development. 

    In 2005, Joined Huawei as part of a Senior Management  Team with a mission to globalize the Technical Service division Mr. So joined Huawei in 2005 as part of a senior management team with a mission to globalize the Technical Service division. He was then appointed as the Head of Solution Sales for Finance, Transportation, Utilities and Government in 2010. 

    Prior to Huawei, Mr. So worked for various global ICT providers, where he was responsible for driving the companies’ enterprise and telecom businesses in the Asia Pacific region since 1995. He was also a consultant for SMEs in China, providing strategic direction and guidance on overseas expansion for their businesses.

  • Michael Hill King

    European Research Institute

    Michael Hill-King joined Huawei Technologies in June 2015 as Collaboration Director, UK R&D Centre. His role is to drive and support all research projects between Huawei and UK universities and to support interactions with the UK based technology suppliers. Important aspects of this role are building and maintaining strong relationships with UK partners and communicating the strengths of the UK research base to Huawei’s R&D team. 

    Prior to joining Huawei, Michael served as Director of Partnerships at King’s College London. There, he led a portfolio of functions for the university including major commercial partnerships, and knowledge transfer and entrepreneurial schemes. Michael joined King’s in September 2009 from Imperial College London where he led the College’s business development activities in Engineering and Technology, having joined the College in 2003 to manage major research bids and projects. 

    His areas of expertise are in business growth and technology development, knowledge transfer, collaborative research, intellectual property and industry-academic relations. Previously, Michael spent over fifteen years in business, primarily in sales and marketing roles with industrial and scientific equipment companies. Michael read Physics at the University of Sheffield and holds an MBA with distinction.
