For millions of people, the app has made financial services part of everyday life.

Myanmar’s mobile money movement

When KBZ Bank launched KBZPay in late 2018, Myanmar was still overwhelmingly dependent on cash. Only a minority of people had conventional bank accounts, particularly outside the major cities, and millions had no practical access to a bank branch or formal financial services.

Mobile technology offered people another route into the financial system. Instead of requiring customers to visit a branch, KBZPay allowed customers to register through their phones. They could also use smartphones to store and transfer money, make payments, and convert cash into digital funds through a network of merchants and agents.

Bridging the access gap

The problem of access to financial services has definitely improved, but it has not disappeared. The latest World Bank data show that fewer than half of Myanmar’s adults have any kind of financial account, even when mobile-money accounts are included. The country remains heavily cash-based and financially underserved, making mobile platforms such as KBZPay an important bridge between everyday cash transactions and the formal financial system.

Since its launch, KBZPay has grown into Myanmar’s largest mobile wallet. Its more than 19 million registered users use it to scan and receive QR payments, transfer money 24 hours a day, top up cell phone balances, and pay utility bills and school fees. They can also deposit or withdraw cash through participating merchants and agents, ATMs, and KBZ Bank accounts.

As KBZPay grew, it carried KBZ Bank far beyond the traditional business of branches and bank accounts. The app became a gateway to financial and commercial services from a growing range of providers, bringing more of everyday economic life onto a single mobile platform.

Building for growth

Built with Huawei on a cloud-based platform, KBZPay can bring services from other companies directly into the app. Customers don’t need to download a separate app for each provider. The same design allows KBZPay to add partners and launch new features quickly.

KBZPay was designed to remain available even as millions of customers use it at the same time. The platform can process up to 30,000 transactions a second and has achieved 99.999% availability, the “five nines” benchmark that allows for only a few minutes of downtime each year.

It was also built to change quickly. KBZPay introduced more than 100 releases in its first three years, adding new features and improving the service without disrupting customers. Its fraud controls were also designed to detect suspicious activity while keeping errors to extremely low levels.

That capacity has become increasingly important. The number of financial transactions processed through KBZPay rose from 1.2 billion in 2023 to more than 2.1 billion in 2024, an increase of more than 75%.

Beyond the branch

KBZPay matters not only because of the number of transactions it handles, but because of the people it can reach.

Many customers still earn, spend, and save largely in cash, and may live far from a bank branch. KBZPay’s network of merchants and agents gives them a way to deposit or withdraw cash, which they can then manage through their phones.

For millions of people, the app has made financial services part of everyday life, rather than something that begins at a bank counter. For KBZ Bank, it has opened a route to customers and services that a conventional branch network could never reach on its own.
