SMEs are the backbone of the UAE economy. That line gets used a lot, and it is true. They create jobs, open new markets, bring fresh ideas into communities, and play a huge role in the UAE's diversification story. The UAE Central Bank projects 5.6% GDP growth in 2026, driven by non-oil sectors, and SMEs are central to this long-term growth story.
They are also some of the most demanding customers in the market, and I mean that in the best possible way. An SME does not have the luxury of complexity. They do not want technology for the sake of technology. They want solutions that work, that are simple to manage, and that help them get on with running their businesses.
That is the mindset we bring to the SME segment at du. We are not just looking at how to sell connectivity. We are looking at how to remove friction from the entrepreneur's journey, from the first shop or office through to a growing business with bigger ambitions.
Why connectivity has to be simple
For many small businesses, their first requirements are not complicated. They need reliable internet. They need to take payments. They need to respond to customers. They need their staff to stay connected. They need to open quickly and avoid losing time waiting for basic infrastructure to be ready.
That is where 5G has made a massive difference. It gives SMEs a way to get up and running quickly, without installations or long delays. For a café, a clinic, a small retailer, a salon, a legal office, or a start-up team, that can be the difference between waiting and trading.
This is why du introduced 5G Business Starter. It was built around a simple idea: Give small businesses dependable connectivity without making them navigate a complex enterprise process. It helps smaller teams get online, serve customers, and focus on growth with less hassle.
Designed around the way SMEs actually work
The mistake many providers make is assuming every business wants the same thing. They do not. A small retail outlet is different from a professional services firm. A start-up with three people is different from an SME preparing to scale across the UAE. The needs change quickly, and the support has to change with them.
Our approach has been to build around that reality. For smaller locations, 5G Business Starter gives businesses a practical way to get connected fast. For growing teams that need wider coverage across an office, Starter Pro brings together 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi access points, fixed telephony, and productivity tools in one simple package.
In areas where fiber is available, our FTTO+X Ultimate Plan supports SMEs that need high-performance fixed connectivity and stronger in-office coverage. The point is not to force every customer into one product. The point is to give each business the right foundation for where they are now, and where they want to go next.
From connectivity to confidence
Connectivity is the starting point, but it is not the whole story. SMEs increasingly need cybersecurity, cloud storage, digital tools, collaboration platforms, online presence support, and advice on how to use all of it properly.
That matters because too much choice can become a problem. I speak to entrepreneurs who are excited about digital, but also overwhelmed by it. They know they need to modernize, but they do not always know where to start. That is where du can play a bigger role than a traditional telecom provider.
We want to make digital easier. That means bundling the right services, offering practical support, and helping business owners avoid technology paralysis. SMEs should not have to become infrastructure experts. They should feel confident that the basics are covered, the tools are useful, and the support is there when they need it.
Building an ecosystem SMEs can rely on
To serve SMEs properly, you have to be close to them. That means digital channels, but it also means local partners, distributors, advisors, and people who understand the realities on the ground.
du has continued to build a channel and partner ecosystem that helps us reach more businesses across the UAE and support them in a more practical way. We have also invested in digital self-service, so SMEs can manage subscriptions, monitor usage, and raise requests more easily.
This balance is important. Digital tools create speed and convenience. Human support creates trust. SMEs need both, especially when they are making decisions that affect their operations, customers, and cash flow.
The results show the demand is real
The growth we have seen in the SME segment shows that this approach is working. du's SME customer base has grown significantly, moving from around 70,000 customers in 2023 to more than 100,000 in 2025. SME business revenue has also increased by more than 20%, with value-added services becoming an important growth driver.
In SME 5G-dedicated connectivity, du has also strengthened its position, with market share growing from 15% in 2023 to 40% in 2025. These numbers matter, but what they really show is the scale of demand from SMEs for faster, simpler, and more flexible digital solutions.
Behind every number is a business trying to move faster. A retailer opening a new outlet. A professional services firm improving how it serves clients. A start-up building momentum. A founder trying to do more with less. That is the real story.
What we have learned
There are three lessons I take from this journey.
First, simplicity wins. SMEs do not want complexity dressed up as innovation. They want products that are clear, easy to activate and easy to manage.
Second, partnerships matter. No one supports SMEs alone. Technology partners, local dealers, digital platforms, and ecosystem programs all help make solutions more accessible and useful.
Third, connectivity has to grow into something bigger. The future of SME support is not just broadband or mobile lines. It is an integrated digital foundation that helps businesses work smarter, protect themselves, reach customers, and scale with confidence.
Helping SMEs start, grow, and go further
The UAE is one of the most exciting places in the world to start and grow a business. The ambition is there. The government support is there. The infrastructure is there. The talent and ideas are definitely there.
Our job at du is to help make that journey easier. We want entrepreneurs and SMEs to feel that they are not alone, and that they have a partner who understands what they are trying to build.
That is what this work is really about. Not technology for the sake of it. Not products for the sake of products. It is about giving SMEs the confidence to move faster, operate better, and scale to the next level.
Because when SMEs grow, the UAE grows with them.
