Alex Sinclair, CTO of GSMA, envisages a connected life where the power of mobile stimulates other industries and sectors. It’s a huge opportunity for mobile carriers. Based on GSMA research, the addressable market for operators alone is worth of USD1.2 trillion. Specifically, by 2020, the market value is expected to reach USD600 billion, among which one third will be for connectivity while the other two-thirds are for services and devices related to that connectivity.
Sinclair also advises operators to move beyond the current mobile application fad, and look at more vertical business opportunities. He elaborates on m-health, which he considers one of the most exciting areas in the connected space, as well as one of the most important sectors for society. As he points out, healthcare costs have been running 2% ahead of GDP in all developed economies for the last 20 years. By using remote monitoring devices, these costs can be reduced significantly. Finally, Sinclair encourages carriers to unlock the health market, which should motivate healthcare specialists and insurance companies to contribute as well.
