CAICT, Huawei jointly release VR/AR white paper

China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and Huawei Technologies jointly released the Virtual/Augmented Reality White Paper (2017).

Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) is a key field of the new-generation information and communications technology, which has wide application and huge potential, involving a wide variety of technologies. VR/AR will drive the transformation and upgrade of core components, smart devices, network transmission devices, cloud devices, telecom services, software, and industrial information services.

This white paper focuses on the recent development, technology architecture, subsystems, and technology roadmap of VR/AR, map of enterprises in the industry chain in China, and proposals on the industry development.

The white paper consists of four parts: development background, trends in critical technologies, trends in the industry ecosystem, and recommended strategies, providing systematic, deep, and comprehensive insights into the trends of critical VR/AR technologies and industry ecosystem development for the first time.

As highlighted in the white paper, VR/AR inherently involves multiple technology domains. Major domains include perception and interaction, near-eye display, network transmission, rendering, and content creation. The VR era is coming. The industry ecosystem consisting of components/devices, tools/platforms, and content/applications is taking into shape. The development of the VR/AR industry is in a spiral cycle of "hardware-content-hardware-content".

The white paper also suggests that China should focus on the following aspects for the development of the VR/AR industry: development of cross-domain technologies, integration, and innovation; development of tools and platforms and promotion of applications and services; establishment of public service platforms and improvement in engineering and technical services.

The paper predicts that VR/AR terminals will be lighter and cheaper and become household items. With the arrival of cloud VR, cloud rendering will require higher bandwidth and lower latency, meaning that the continued development of the VR/AR industry depends on ultra-broadband networks.

Huawei has always been dedicated to the facilitation of the VR/AR industry development. As an ultra-broadband network innovation lab, Huawei iLab has been working closely with industry partners to explore the commercial application scenarios, service solutions, and network transmission solutions of cloud VR, facilitating cloud VR implementation.
