Hainan province has been faced with serious imbalance of medical resources across the province, high pressure in central hospitals, and difficulties for common people to see a doctor. With the large-scale commercial use of 5G, 5G smart healthcare is bound to become more mature and popular, delivering more convenient, faster, and better medical services to the public. Hainan province, together with China Unicom and Huawei, launched the "5G Smart Healthcare Lights up Hainan Healthy Island" project. The project is currently the largest 5G commercial application project in China and the first provincial 5G-based remote diagnosis project in which all primary healthcare institutions are digitalized.

Taking China Unicom's 5G Private Network PLUS as the foundation, this project combines 5GCtoB One Telco Cloud 5G slicing and MEC network capabilities with smart healthcare to deploy diagnosis, monitoring, and emergency medicine services at primary health centers. In the project, 5G telemedicine devices have been deployed in 18 city/county-level hospitals, 340 township health centers, and 2700 village clinics. A hierarchical diagnosis and treatment platform has been constructed to provide remote consultation and technical assurance for primary medical institutions. The project aims at providing leading primary medical services in China so that small diseases can be treated within primary health centers and serious diseases can be treated within the Hainan Island. To achieve this, the project team has set up a smart healthcare demonstration benchmark that comprehensively applies to multiple scenarios at all levels of medical institutions in Hainan. In addition to the provisioning of medical services such as pre-hospital emergency medicine, remote consultation, and smart diagnosis, the province's primary medical capabilities are comprehensively improved, quality medical services become available to all residents, and the medical treatment time is shortened by 3 to 5 hours on average, with 30% improvement in efficiency.

Liang Baojun, Vice President of China Unicom, said, "It is a great honor to win this award together with the Health Commission of Hainan Province and Huawei. The success of the Hainan 5G Smart Healthcare Project demonstrates the broad prospect for 5G in industry applications. China Unicom will continue to build 5G Private Network PLUS, build differentiated network capabilities, deeply explore industry scenario-specific applications, and improve the E2E operation service process to enable 5G to better serve and benefit the whole society."

"GSMA is promoting the application of 5G in city governance, promoting the digital, networked, and intelligent transformation of cities and building secure, livable, efficient, intelligent, and green 5G cities," said Sihan Bo Chen, Head of Greater China of GSMA. "The '5G Smart Healthcare Lights up Hainan Healthy Island' project jointly launched by China Unicom, Health Commission of Hainan Province, and Huawei fully unleashes the great potential of 5G to protect the life and health of citizens. It is an outstanding representative of 5G City cases."

Li Wenxiu, Deputy Director of the Health Commission of Hainan Province, said, "We are grateful for GSMA's recognition of Hainan's 5G Smart Healthcare Project and for the strong support from China Unicom and Huawei. We will continue to explore more application scenarios for smart healthcare and smart health and unite efforts to build Hainan as an island of ecology, health, and longevity."

Richard Liu, President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, said, "I would like to thank the industry for the high recognition of the innovative 5G smart healthcare achievements jointly built by the three parties. Huawei will continue to work with operators and industry partners to promote the comprehensive and coordinated development of 5G, stimulate the innovation of 5G applications, and accelerate the integration of 5G into various industries to serve the public."
