Creating a model for smart care in China

(Posted June 2022) For patient care, 5G provides network capabilities that are just what the doctor ordered: high network security that keep patients’ data safe, the ability to connect a large number of devices without a deterioration in network quality, lots of bandwidth, low latency, and an extremely high reliability of connection.

Huawei started to research healthcare applications of 5G in 2016. And since 2019, it’s been working with the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing to deploy 5G in real-world situations.

One of the China’s top medical facilities, China-Japan Friendship Hospital serves as a training facility for interns from several universities, including those from the elite Peking University. The facility treats government leaders and was nominated as the treatment center for international athletes who took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Working with Huawei, 30 hospitals throughout the country, as well as all major Chinese network operators, China-Japan Friendship Hospital has spearheaded efforts to standardize the use of 5G in hospital care. This standardization will open the door to new ways to treat patients. Telemedicine, for example, allows remotely-located patients to be treated without the delays and risks that travel involves.

China-Japan Friendship Hospital is making use of the high connection reliability of 5G to connect devices including displays, pharmaceutical smart carts, robot nursing assistants, and infusion monitors. Telemedicine has shortened the delivery of healthcare from 3 days to as little as 10 minutes, in some cases. And when several specialists need to work together to accurately diagnose a patient, 5G facilitates and speeds up the instant sharing of patients’ files containing large amounts of data.
