In 2014, Huawei worked with Ghent University to launch the Seeds for the Future program in Belgium, winning a warm response from the university and local government. Belgian Ambassador to China, HE Mr. Michel Malherbe said, “We embrace the cooperation between Huawei and Ghent University because people-to-people exchanges are essential for our bilateral partnership. Innovation is driving our bilateral relationship. In Belgium, Huawei invests heavily in innovation, and I am convinced that a closer collaboration with universities and students will strengthen our partnerships in innovation.”
The program was a great success in Belgium in 2014. In 2015, Huawei partnered with four leading universities: Ghent University, Catholic University of Louvain, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). In June 2015, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei met with H.M. King Philippe of Belgium, and briefed him on why Huawei implemented the Seeds for the Future program. King Philippe praised Huawei for helping Belgium nurture ICT talent and met the representatives of excellent students. In August 2015, 16 top ICT students arrived in China for the two-week internship program at Huawei. During the program, they received scholarships for training in leading ICT technologies, visited Huawei’s labs, and engaged with Huawei employees.
