In today's global economy, SMEs stand as both one of the most dynamic groups of businesses and a robust pillar of economic growth and social development. In China alone, over 52 million SMEs account for 95% of all businesses and contribute more than 60% to the nation's GDP. Despite their compact sizes, these firms run remarkably diverse operations, often packing daily office work, customer receptions, meeting rooms, employee lounges, live e-commerce setups, and warehousing into a limited space of tens to hundreds of square meters. As digitalization deepens, high-bandwidth, low-latency services like remote videoconferencing, HD live streaming, and cloud migration have become indispensable for SMEs' day-to-day operations. Consequently, SMEs now have an increasingly urgent need for high-quality Wi-Fi networking and intelligent O&M services.
Due to limited funds and their smaller scale, SMEs frequently find the high costs of deployment and ongoing maintenance to be particularly challenging when adopting digital transformation tools. A survey of SMEs reveals that 87% are highly cost-sensitive when it comes to deployment; 80% explicitly require robust Internet Wi-Fi and video security; 78% favor integrated services; 75% urgently need unified O&M tools; and over 70% hope to have their entire network deployed and delivered within a week. These findings outline the critical needs of SMEs: networks that are affordable, high-performing, and easy to manage.
Pioneering FTTO: The ideal partner for SMEs' digital and intelligent transformation
Huawei has long been focused on building digital and intelligent transformation solutions for SMEs. With the industry's first fiber to the office (FTTO) solution for SMEs, Huawei is committed to providing the most reliable "last 10 meters" of intranet connectivity for SMEs through fiber networking. This approach ensures committed Wi-Fi rates, guaranteed network-wide roaming, and stable services with a superior user experience. Compared to traditional Ethernet or Wi-Fi technologies, Huawei’s FTTO solution offers the following distinct advantages:
- Ultra-broadband experience: The FTTO solution delivers ultra-broadband with rock-solid stability for over 1,000 active users, meeting requirements for concurrent large-scale access. Harnessing all-fiber networking, it ensures lossless transmission and Wi-Fi speeds exceeding 1 Gbit/s. The master device centrally and intelligently allocates air interface resources in real time, enhancing throughput in dense access scenarios and ensuring seamless roaming handover.
- Effortless O&M: The FTTO solution features a highly integrated architecture. The master device merges the functions of conventional optical network units (ONUs), routers, AC controllers, integrated access devices (IADs), and PoE switches. For endpoint deployment, slave devices use hybrid cables to receive remote power supply over distances up to 150 meters, eliminating the constraints of local power availability and enabling more flexible deployment scenarios.
- Energy saving: The FTTO solution uses optical fiber as its transmission medium, consuming less energy than copper cabling and aligning with green, low-carbon development goals. Paired with highly integrated devices, the solution reduces the overall system energy consumption by approximately one-third, and cabling work by roughly the same amount. With a lifespan exceeding 30 years and the capacity for future bandwidth upgrades, optical fiber stands ready for long-term network evolution.
Building an all-optical ecosystem to drive FTTO industry development
Industry players are working together to advance the standardization and specification of FTTO technologies. In 2023, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and China's top 3 carriers jointly released the SME Service Experience Grading White Paper, which clearly identifies FTTO as the best technical path for carriers to help SMEs build gigabit networks now and in the future. In 2024, CAICT and industry players further summarized standard solutions for typical scenarios such as business offices, restaurants, chain retail stores, and leisure and entertainment venues, based on carriers' FTTO development and use cases across China. The SME FTTO Construction Guide White Paper provides a professional, replicable, implementable guide for high-quality and large-scale FTTO development. In addition, the Guanghua Cup, an influential innovation contest in the gigabit optical network domain, set up the Digital SME track. The event attracted more than 1,700 excellent SME scenario-based cases across China, effectively expanding FTTO's market penetration.
The FTTO solution has been deployed at scale for SMEs around the world, earning widespread acclaim from businesses. Globally, over 15,000 all-optical campuses have been commercially deployed. In China, the three major carriers have each launched distinct all-optical networking services built around FTTO: China Telecom pioneered the FTTO all-optical intelligent enterprise networking service, China Unicom developed its all-optical FTTO brand solution, and China Mobile rolled out its FTTO all-optical e-networking service, providing SMEs with the deterministic gigabit experience.
The latest statistics show that 81 carrier companies in China have launched FTTO packages. In 2025, the FTTO user base grew 43% year-on-year, surpassing 2 million cumulative users. FTTO has been applied to business offices, restaurants, leisure and entertainment venues, chain retail stores, e-commerce live streaming, education and training institutions, community-level public services, shared accommodation, smart communities, and more. At the same time, FTTO has become the main engine for carriers to grow private line service revenue. In 2025, FTTO-related service revenue grew by 300% YoY, with FTTO average ARPU 40% higher than traditional private lines.
Continuous innovation: Extending carriers' reach from connectivity to integrated services
As AI advances, open-source large models represented by DeepSeek have significantly lowered barriers for SMEs to harness data, computing power, and advanced models, which is enhancing their digital and intelligent transformations. In this context, integrated services that merge carriers' FTTO solutions with AI applications have emerged as the preferred choice for businesses. As the pioneer of FTTO, Huawei has always grounded its efforts in the actual business needs of SMEs, using all-optical networking as the foundation and integrating value-added capabilities such as video security and AI computing. This approach enables carriers to extend their strategic focus from mere network connectivity to comprehensive, integrated services.
- Upgraded networking capabilities: Huawei's next-gen FTTO B50 series revolutionizes networking with Wi-Fi 7 and 4K QAM, delivering a 20% speed boost over traditional solutions and maintaining a stable 2,000 Mbit/s air interface rate. The industry's first Wi-Fi 7 intelligent scheduling algorithm, powered by the embedded AI engine, precisely identifies device types and applications, prioritizing VIP services like online cloud collaboration and HD live streaming to guarantee deterministic latency of 20 ms or less. On the management side, the user app supports self-service O&M, easy guest Wi-Fi setup, flexible bandwidth throttling, and precise app management.
- Integrated intelligent security: Surveys reveal that 90% of stores deploy network and security systems concurrently. Traditionally, these two systems run as separate setups with separate devices, leading to high installation and maintenance costs, significant space consumption, and long deployment times. Huawei provides the industry's first FTTO video convergence gateway that seamlessly unifies optical networking and video security, integrating the functions of conventional gateways and network video recorders (NVRs). This integration not only reduces hardware procurement costs and space usage for store owners, but also improves deployment and maintenance efficiency for engineering service providers. Moreover, the solution leverages SuperCoding and AI-driven pixel-level segmentation to accurately identify valuable information in video frames and compress low-value content, saving video storage space by more than 75%.
- Converged computing engine: As foundation models increasingly penetrate production scenarios, SMEs are seeking more intelligent ways of working. In response, Huawei has introduced the FTTO Intelligent Computing Appliance. With up to 560 TOPS of computing power, this device supports on-premises deployment of models with up to 32 billion parameters, such as Qwen, providing enterprises with intelligent applications like office assistance and AI-driven code writing. For visual intelligence, it supports the intelligent integration of over 100 video channels, powering applications like intelligent attendance, fire alert identification, and intrusion detection. In addition, equipped with an independent iBMC management module, the appliance ensures stable and reliable remote management, even if the main CPU fails.
Looking ahead, Huawei remains committed to innovation-driven growth, continuously advancing the iteration and evolution of the FTTO technical framework while integrating diverse service capabilities spanning networking, cloud, computing, security, and video. At the same time, Huawei seeks collaboration with partners across the entire industry chain to jointly build and refine the FTTO standard system for SMEs, accelerating the global deployment of this integrated solution. By empowering SMEs' digital and intelligent transformation, Huawei aims to inject robust all-optical momentum into their high-quality development in the AI era.
