PCCW Builds the Best 3G Network of Hong Kong (PDF - 372K)
PCCW is the largest provider of integrated information and communication services in Hong Kong, with operations in mobile communication, fixed-line phone, broadband access, IPTV and so on. Based on its innovative operations and best-in-class 3G network coverage, PCCW has become the leading mobile operator in Hong Kong.
Coverage in the world's most complicated radio environment
The main urban area of Hong Kong has a complicated radio environment with a population density of 250,000people/km2, a building density of 630 buildings/km2, and an average building height of 45 meters. For this complicated coverage scenarios in Hong Kong, PCCW and Huawei applied a pertinent wireless implementation plan and coverage method successfully.
In the densely populated areas, such as Causeway Bay, it obtains a more practical coverage forecasting model to forecast field intensity by RTP ray tracing method, and gets precise network planning by 3D digital map with an accuracy of 5 meters.
In dense commercial areas, such as Central, 3D coverage of high-rises is realized by up tilt, down tilt and power splitting; the unique drip irrigation technology is also adopted to realize precise multi-point small range coverage.
The user surveys and third-party network tests show that PCCW's 3G network has covered the whole territory of Hong Kong and is the best 3G network in Hong Kong, with good signal quality and low call drop rate.
A wonder of rapid and economical network rollout
The joint engineering team of PCCW and Huawei has set a number of construction records, like completion of installation and debugging of 150 Node Bs in a single month and 18 Node Bs in a single day. Huawei's macro Node B 3812E is compact and highly integrated, supports 3-side against wall installation, shortens station construction period and facilitates delivery; the outdoor distributed Node B needs no equipment room and is convenient to install. It takes just half a day to deploy a Node B.
To meet the need for rapid construction, Huawei offer a series of intelligent tools. For example, the WRAN Engineering Design Aid System can generate data configuration files for 100 Node Bs in just 5 minutes; the Simulator Intelligent Tool can carry out single-station debugging when transmission is not in place.
PCCW realized seamless inter-system coverage with 2G/3G networks, through "prefer to camp on 3G, 3G to 2G voice handover, and bi-directional reselection of data", speeding up the 3G network deployment.
Enjoy mobile TV anytime, anywhere
PCCW's 3G services are unique in Hong Kong, with over 20 varieties, including streaming, download, positioning, mobile TV, multi-network video inter-working, and unified messaging. The BOSS operating system has also realized the combined charging of voice, data and contents.
In 2006, PCCW became the first mobile phone TV service provider in the world based on the 3G broadcasting technology. The CMB technology supports the simultaneous provision of the mobile phone TV service to up to 256 users per cell, while the ordinary broadcasting technology provides service to 6-8 users per cell only. PCCW will also work closely with Huawei in the area of MBMS.
The operator attaches great importance to network development and evolution, and has applied new-generation Node Bs that support full performance HSPA widely. PCCW presented the first commercial demonstration of the 7.2Mbps HSDPA service on ITU Telecom World 2006.
With the seamless coverage, quality network performance, rich applications, attentive and excellent services, PCCW has brought subscribers fast, rich, personalized and wonderful 3G experiences, and is attracting more and more high ARPU subscribers.
