Singapore Takes the HSPA High Road

——StarHub swap the unsatisfied UTRAN to supply full-performance HSPA service

"We have been impressed by Huawei's 3G technology roadmap, especially their ability to deliver next-generation wireless applications and services quickly. We are confident that Huawei's solutions will help us deliver an enhanced 3G experience to our customers."

Singapore Takes the HSPA High Road (PDF - 283KB)

StarHub is Singapore's leading info-communication company and the sole operator delivering a full range of information, communications and entertainment services over fixed, cable, mobile and Internet platforms.

Swap the existing unsatisfied performance vendor for full HSPA service

Since first launching its 3G service in 2005, StarHub has built more than 800 Node Bs. Built around an ageing architecture and platform, StarHub's UTRAN network is weak in supporting IP and HSDPA technology and there are unacceptable network In-service performance, such as sleeping cell, blocked cells. Any upgrade of these facilities would be very expensive and the investment involved would not be recoverable. After in-depth deliberation, StarHub chooses Huawei as its sole UTRAN supplier to swap the existing unsatisfied performance vendor. Starhub will launch the 7.2Mbps HSDPA network in 2007.

Quick and cost-effective delivery

It was vital for StarHub to launch the HSDPA service at the promised time once it had been announced. Given that Huawei's ultra-compact, standard design BBUs require no special equipment room, StarHub were able to easily adapt them for GSM cabinet usage, or simply install them in passageways, staircases, basements and a variety of other small spaces. It also significantly reduces operators' CAPEX and OPEX because of its small size, low power
consumption, and excellent coverage.

Utilize the existing IP backbone to achieve savings of transmission

HSDPA services require strong space on the transmission bandwidth of base stations. So, StarHub plans to make full use of its existing broadband network resources as it continues to expand its new 3G network. In following this road, StarHub will leverage Huawei's one-year–ahead Iub IP transmission solution.
Huawei's distributed Node B enables IP transmission and offers a wide range of tailored Iub IP transmission solutions to suit different IP RAN networking applications. By adopting this solution, StarHub can easily achieve savings of between 40-90% on transmission costs.

Leading MBMS for StarHub Mobile TV Solution

In Singapore, StarHub is the only vendor with both No.1 video broadcast content and No.2 mobile network. The new unique broadcaster license for popular England soccer in Singapore for 3 years is a high value for 3G subscribers. With Huawei`s leading MBMS solution, which is the most cost-effective way in the mobile TV StarHub can gain revenue from 1.5 million mobile subscriber by reusing the existing content resources.

Milestones

  • June 2007,more than 1000 sites are on air.
  • February 2007, StarHub selected Huawei's HSPA solutions to upgrade its 3G mobile network in Singapore.
