Except South Africa, southern African countries have a penetration rate no higher than 20% for telecommunication services. Opportunities for high growth in low penetration exist in the whole region.

Ghana, with 1.9 million mobile subscribers in 2004 and 4 million in 2006 and a penetration rate of 18% in 2006, has had a swift increase in its mobile subscriber base in the past several years.

Tigo, as the second largest mobile operator in Ghana, taking 28.57% of Ghana market with 1 .3 million subscribers by the end of 2006, provides various services including SMS, MMS and RBT.

Voice service enabled sustainable development

To satisfy subscribers' needs of low tariff, wide coverage and flexible call fee control, and improve the communication environment, Tigo chose Huawei to provide the voice services such as VPN in 2004. Afterwards Tigo expanded the system capacity from 0.8 million to nearly 5 million, enabling much better user experience.

New services realized All-around development

Besides expanding basic voice services, Huawei provided Tigo with SMS, postpaid and broadband download services. Soon enough, Tigo became a provider of comprehensive services, with a lower churn rate and a higher position in Ghana.

Tigo gained flying development from this. Its market share changed from 24% in the first quarter in 2006 to 28.57% in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, its sales were bursting. The growth rate was near 30% at the beginning of 2006 and became 150% at the end of the year.

RBT service,a door leading to digital music

Since the launching of RBT service in 2004, the subscriber capacity had expanded from 20,000 to 500,000 in 2006. Tigo launched its RBT brand "tiGO ColorRing" in March 2006, after that, Subscribers only need to pay $0.5 per month for the service. It has attracted 100,000 subscribers so far.

Together with local TV stations and radio stations, Tigo promote RBT service through various activities. From Tigo's website, subscribers can download the latest songs to their PCs or mobile handsets.

Recently, Tigo is planning to launch digital music services represented by RBT including full-track downloading and music community.
