In the year of 2008, Warid Telecom, deployed the country's first solar powered BTS site using Huawei's Solar Powered Macro Base Station (BTS). Huawei's environmentally-friendly Solar Powered Macro BTS allows the operator to extend its network reach into remote areas of the country where there is limited access to the electricity grid.
Warid Pakistan is a joint venture of Abu Dhabi Group and SingTel Group. The number of Pakistani mobile subscribers has increased from 2.4million to 89 million since 2003 .With the booming market growth, Warid has been planning to expand network coverage in small and medium sized cities, suburban areas, countryside, as well as in mountainous areas with poor transportation links.
Since many of these remote areas have limited access to the electricity grid, operators have traditionally used 1+1 Diesel Generator Solutions to power their network sites. Warid Telecom chose Huawei's Solar Powered BTS. The non-hybrid site is 100% powered by solar energy, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions and noise pollution, both of which is harmful to the local environment. The solution also reduces pressure on Pakistan's overall energy supply which further benefits the environment.
Meanwhile, Warid Pakistan selected Huawei for the professional and aggressive Turnkey network expansion solution, with expertise in site acquisition, civil works, telecom integration, network migration and project management, logistics management.
Warid and Huawei established an efficient program operation mode to run the project, which includes the steering committee of senior management, Implementation team, and regional peer to peer War Room system. Warid and Huawei succeeded deploying the network within only 6 months launched over 700 sites, which set an extremely fast roll out benchmark considering network scale, climate challenges and infrastructure conditions of deployment area. Warid gained over 5 million subscribers in the period and kept its market position ranking the 3rd.
CEO of Warid Pakistan appreciated the excellent delivery capacity of Huawei team in all the monthly review meetings, and outlined the performance as: "On behalf of Warid, and personally as well, I thank you, Huawei Team. Warid need a reliable partner as Huawei to further expand our network and thus develop in this market".
