PTCL, which was established in 1947, is the largest integrated operator in Pakistan and also the only full-service telecom operator in the country. PTCL provides services of mobile network, fixed network and cable TV (CATV), with coverage reaching the whole country.
Problems Faced by PTCL
Pakistan is one of the largest countries in South Asia, with a population of 160 million including a rural population of 100 million. Mountainous areas account for 70% of the country. As the largest integrated operator in Pakistan, PTCL adopts CDMA450 to provide telecommunication services for under-populated and geographically complicated rural areas, and adopts CDMA1800 to provide wireless local telephone for populous urban areas. CDMA450 and CDMA1800 have different requirements for access modes and network planning. The traffic model of wireless local telephone is much higher than that of the common mobile telecommunication; meanwhile, telecommunication traffic in rural areas is exceedingly low. Therefore, a uniform core network must be adopted to support application senarios where user distribution and traffic are widely different and meet requirements of unbalanced development of network users. Those are key consideration for PTCL in choosing devices and planning the network.
PTCL chose access devices from various suppliers, making it a problem for the access devices to be normally interconnected and work seamlessly with the core network.
