Etisalat Constructs World's First Commercial 3GPP R4 Softswitch Network

Etisalat is the sole telecom operator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has been actively developing the markets in Mideast, Asia and Africa for a long time, and has become a world's top telecom operators by virtue of advanced technology, high-quality service, comprehensive strengths and excellent management.
Customer demand for 2G/3G services
In early 2001, the opening-up of the telecom market in Mideast brought unprecedented opportunities to Etisalat. Etisalat decided to seize the opportunity to expand overseas markets. It planned to construct a 3G network rapidly and draw more high-end subscribers by providing novel services (like video services) through the 3G network, getting prepared for the upcoming 3G era. However, the operator's existing 2G network was composed of devices from five suppliers, which caused tremendous difficulties for roaming handover. At the same time, the 2G network was very complicated. Therefore, how to protect existing investments while taking care of 2G users' consumption habits became a key issue for Etisalat in constructing the new 3G network.
