--- Reliance successfully transformed with its CDMA strategy
"We have chosen Huawei based on its established credentials as a global company producing high quality products and solutions. The relationship with Huawei will help us maintain and strengthen our leadership position in India, the world's fastest growing telecom market. " ---- Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Communications
Reliance Accelerates Sailing Led by ALL-IP(239KB)
As the largest CDMA operator in the Indian market (by the end of June 2006, Reliance had secured 85% of the CDMA market), Reliance has a market share of more than 25% of the Indian mobile market. Currently, Reliance provides integrated telecommunication services for more than 50 million subscribers across India, including mobile, fixed-line, and broadband.
All IP is the new dynamic
In India, network costs are rising due to shrinking profits. To improve their overall competitiveness, Reliance must reduce their network operating costs and improve their service expansion capability.
To meet the increasing demand for bandwidth, ensure EV-DO evolution, and protect existing investments, Reliance has to move to All-IP and introduce UMB, a super mobile broadband technology, into the new generation CDMA system. Huawei proposed their leading mobile IP solution to Reliance, covering IP base stations, IP transmission, IP platform, and end-to-end planning and design processes. Huawei performed an in-depth analysis of each site, including IP port number and broadband width with precise optimization of each bit. Huawei's ALL-IP solution protects Reliance's existing investments and increases subscriber satisfaction by offering better services at the same price.
Rapid deployment is necessary
In India, the mobile-user base is growing rapidly, increasing by 166% per year. Considerable competitive pressure means Reliance must deploy the network quickly, and implement a timely commercial launch to ensure its dominant position in the marketplace. In response, Huawei accomplished Reliance's first connection in only 10 days, reaching a peak of 50 base stations connected per day. By early Jan. 2008, total 3668 base stations were online and operating. The rapid deployment was accomplished by escalating the schedules for test, engineering, version control, and feature analysis.
Innovative solutions take aim at the tough environment
Average temperatures in north India in the summer are 113°F (45°C), and power sources there are unstable. Primary networks often fail in this environment. Huawei's innovative BTS3606C is designed to remedy this problem. To date, all Reliance sites with installed BTS3606Cs have been trouble-free. The terrain in India is varied and complex, so ease in both installation and O&M is a requirement for the BTS. The Huawei-provided BTS3606AC is designed to operate in such rugged environments, and reliability is high (IP 55) — without quality infrastructures.
Huawei's series of installed base stations, based on the All-IP platform, can reduce transmission costs 60 – 80% over the entire network. This allows maximum protection of the operator's existing investment.
Huawei's base station coverage is up to 1,000 square kilometers in each region, and BTS requirements are reduced by half. Huawei's BSCs support VoIP (Voice over IP), video phone, and mobile broadband multimedia, making Reliance's dream of integrated services a reality.
Brand vision becomes a reality
Huawei's solution relieves much of the pressure Reliance faces in the wake of rapid growth in their subscriber base. This keeps the churn rate down and enhances the Reliance brand. In addition, Reliance's CAPEX and OPEX are reduced.
Huawei's series of base stations allows expansion of Reliance's network coverage from densely-populated urban areas to sparsely-populated mountainous areas of India, and at the same time reduces network risks introduced by the challenging environment. This enables Reliance to achieve high network availability which results in increased user loyalty. Furthermore, rapid network deployments allow Reliance to successfully attract more subscribers and capture a larger share of the market.
Huawei's mature solution is able to protect Reliance's current investments and enhance its capability in targeting future expansions in network services. Reliance has constructed an ALL-IP network capable of evolving smoothly into the future with UMB. This will provide future subscribers with better service and increased reliability in network performance at no additional cost, making Reliance's vision for future growth and brand quality a reality.
Milestones
- By the end of Jan. 2008, Huawei delivers 3668 CDMA BTS to Reliance, and total of 9,000 BTS will be established in Apr.2008.
- December 2007, Reliance selects Huawei to deploy 40,000 GSM BTS covering the whole India.
- July 2007, Reliance official signs long-term strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei. Huawei secured the number one position among telecom suppliers in the Asia-Pacific region for CDMA network construction in 2007.
- At the beginning of May 2007, Huawei wins the Reliance contract for CDMA network expansion, responsible for the supply and installation of nearly 9,000 base stations.
- December 2006, Huawei signs a cooperative contract with Reliance for the CDMA commercial network, with a 60% share.
