Broadband's Soaring Journey With NEUF Telecom

Who is NEUF

January 2004, the LDCOM Group (9 Telecom, LDCOM and Siris) changed its name to "NEUF Telecom". It is a group with a single ambition: to be the best high-speed telecommunication service provider in the France market, one organization oriented toward its customers and a single brand for all activities.

NEUF is a new generation telecom group that has supported the high-speed revolution with a network established in 1998. NEUF grew up very rapidly and become the best-equipped company (network,, technical expertise, financial stability, etc.) to take advantage of the potential of high-speed Internet access.

What is NEUF's goal

NEU's goal is to make broadband services available to all at the most competitive prices and be a leading-position broadband services provider. NEUF enables all of its customers (telecom professionals, corporations, public entities and households) to enjoy the benefits of high-speed Internet access.

Face to face with fierce competition in local areas, how could NEUF survive and profit? The answer is to rely on their own technological solutions to offer differentiating and innovative services like-- TV over DSL; Voice over IP High-Speed Internet access; and Very High Speed DSL, with the most competitive prices and high quality services.

" Now in France, the Internet access is so cheap and easy to acquire! Only 15 Euros and I can surf the InternetInternet with no time limit!", Cloa Lee said at the France & China Culture Forum 2004. " The more amazing service is that I can watch TV programs on 120 channels by broadband access and I only pay one bill to one provider, but in 2002 it was so difficult to access the Internet and I needed to wait so long for them to install it in my apartment". Lee feels the situation now is far beyond his expectation and imagination.

By NEUF organizing more than 10 vendors bidding and clarifying of IP DSLAM to support triple-play services including TV over DSL, voice over IP and high speed Internet access ADSl2+ for more than 8 months , NOT CLEAR why did Huawei organize 10 vendors? Huawei won this 3-year exclusive contract on Nov 2003.

On International Telecom Day, May 17th 2004, NEUF deployed triple-play services include 2Mbit internet, 30 or 120 channels iP TV and VoIP to the public.

The NEUF ADSL customer base reached 130,000 within seven months with 75% of users adopted ADSL2+ technology.

Why has NEUF succeeded?

By the end of 2004, NEUF telecom deployed more than 750,000 ADSL lines with Huawei SmartAX DSLAM in Paris, Marseilles etc 30 cities, and 75% of those are ADSL2+ because of its higher bandwidth and longer distance capability. The triple-play services package is attractive, with the Internet access bandwidth choice from 512 kbps to 2Mbps and IP TV that provide 120 channels program and finally VoIP. These have made Neuf very successful and ranked No.2 in French market. Their influence even reaches into the rest of the European Union. At the European broadband forum in Venice, triple-play service operation and relevant questions still were the hot topics by all the fixed network operators.

Mr. Norbert Thouvenot, Director of business Data of NEUF telecom, said about why NEUF could succeed so fast: "We reduce equipment's CAPEX & OPEX by transforming the network from the original ATM network to an IP-based network, and from DSLAM/ADM/ATM/BRAS/Ethernet independent network we migrated to IP DLSAM which integrate ADM, ATM and BRAS function in one product. In this way, we reduced our CAPEX to 50% less than before. We provide more bandwidth per subscriber to support the new services. These innovative services are Multi-Play-Services, High Speed Internet ADSL2+, VoIP, BroadcastTV, VoD, Gaming, Wi-fi, Visio-conferencing, and Visio-phony. The last reason is we refined the provisioning mechanics (such as Activation/Error/Rollback), and increased ADSL subscribers without increasing OPEX cost related to provisioning failures." Actually, to support TV over DSL by IP DSLAM is not easy. Not only does it require the product have a huge backplane to allow large numbers of on-line users simultaneously, but the Multi-cast protocol processing ability and fast-zapping among channels should be considered. The IP Qos and security, IP address management and resources utility, even the power consumption of each port, the occupation of space by equipment, certification by France ART, none of these could be neglected.

At the same time, after he explained the detail requirements for IP DSLAM, he also mentioned Huawei as a total network solution provider, which cooperated, with NEUF in DSLAM and in transmission fields supplying the cost-effective solution and excellent very responsive technical support, making them very satisfied. Although the 3-years marriage is short, they still believe that Huawei will accompany NEUF telecom move with them to brighter days.
