Indoor Coverage
Overview

As rapidly increasing numbers of 3G networks are deployed throughout the world, a commensurate demand for development of high speed data services also accelerates. Since 70% of data use occurs within buildings (business and residential), improved indoor coverage becomes of paramount importance. Enhancing the quality and reliability of the signal, expanding the coverage area, and generally improving overall efficiency to ensure a high value perception and degree of satisfaction by end users are among the most critical operator concerns responded to by Huawei.

Opportunity & Challenges

Whether for 3G or 4G, to remain competitive, operators must ultimately meet end user expectations of high speed data services anytime, anywhere. Operator questions resolved by Hauwei have included how to make full use of limited frequency resources, how to improve network performance and reliability without increasing the costs, and how to eliminate any consumer fears regarding indoor BTS and antenna deployment. In response to these questions and more, our well proven indoor coverage solution can be tailored for different application scenarios.

Our Solution

For districts where demand for high-speed data is concentrated (office towers, shopping malls, hotels, high-rise apartment buildings, etc.), Huawei provides a distributed BTS in combination with a distributed antenna system (DAS) to achieve optimal coverage. Where the requirement for coverage quality becomes especially high (executive management offices, presentation rooms, and VIP zones, etc.), Huawei's ePico solution meets all expectations. According to specific subscriber requirements (traffic area, coverage quality, building and construction considerations, and relevant factors of economy), Huawei helps operators choose the most appropriate solution which, when coupled with our professional radio network optimization experience, ensures dramatic improvement of all indoor coverage quality and network capacity.

Application

In December 2008, Huawei deployed the world's first commercial Femtocell network for StarHub in Singapore.

In November 2009 , Huawei helped China Unicom to launch the commercial 3G Femtocell service, branded 3G Inn. Due to the successful applicaiotn in Femtocell, China Unicom received a Golden Award from "The 4th Telecommunications Application and Innovation Technology Awards."

Benefits
  • Huawei's award winning enhanced coverage solution proved capable of addressing the needs of significantly greater indoor traffic, while improving area traffic distribution demand and subsequently reducing the number and costs of outdoor base stations that were previously required.
  • With improved indoor coverage StarHub found that the outdoor network load and interface requirements were correspondingly reduced and the capacity of their overall network was increased.
  • Huawei's indoor coverage solution also increased customer satisfaction and loyalty by providing improved end-user experiences via enhanced bandwidth and expanded coverage areas.

Responding to worldwide trends in respect of broadband expectations, and mirroring the need addressed by Huawei in Singapore, Huawei believes that more and more fixed network subscribers will be attracted by the advantages of mobile networks. In turn, we are convinced that our advanced indoor coverage products and solutions provide mobile operators with the ultimate tools for increasing brand loyalty, and accelerating competitive advantages, while also decreasing costs and realizing added revenue streams.
