Winners--Committed to India’s inclusive growth
WinWin (Issue 03)

Huawei' s engagement with India goes back to 1999 when Huawei' s first overseas R&D center was established in Bangalore. Over the past 10 years, Huawei has played a pivotal role in the rapid growth of the Indian telecom industry. The company has been on the vanguard of India' s telecom revolution by providing cutting edge technology to all the telecom operators, thus enabling connectivity to over 400 million telecom users in the country. Huawei' s participation and contribution to India' s nation building rest on the bedrock of competitive and energy-efficient green technology ably supported by high-quality local talent and augmented by the company' s social sector initiatives, thus contributing towards bridging the country' s digital divide.

Bridging the digital divide from 4 percent to 40 percent

Mass proliferation of telecom services is a reality today in India and Huawei is proud of being an active player by providing cutting-edge technologies and unrelenting focus on innovation based on the operator' s business needs. In particular, Huawei broadband solutions are the key to unlock the vast potential India' s rural telephony has to offer. As a world leader in broadband solutions, Huawei assists operators in breaking the bandwidth bottleneck by providing ubiquitous broadband connectivity thus providing new opportunities for growth.

Thanks to technology from leading global vendors like Huawei, mobile telephony has become very affordable in India thus resulting in larger penetration and wider footprint among the vast Indian population. India' s teledensity has leap-frogged from a mere 4 percent in 1995 to approximately 42 percent in 2009 creating a vast and growing pool of 420 million inter-connected Indians who are increasingly enriching their lives through the ubiquitous mobile phone. The cost per call per minute has also taken a steep nosedive from a whopping 16 rupees per minute to less than a rupee, making it a truly mass product.

For the operators, Huawei' s telecom solutions significantly reduce transmission costs, improve quality of services, facilitate broadband services applications, and ultimately help operators achieve a smooth broadband transformation. As a global leader in All-IP based bearer networks, Huawei also helps operators enhance network bandwidth capability thus considerably reducing OPEX by almost 30 percent.

Green India through green Huawei

Global warming and emission control are the main planks on which all nations in the world are powering their economy and India is no exception. How to enhance the nation' s overall growth and competitiveness while protecting the environment is the main question in the minds of Indian policy planners. Multitude challenges of enormous magnitude arise due to flawed designs in basic telecom infrastructure, complicated engineering, higher power consumption and rising transmission cost.

To address the above issues, Huawei has been consistently creating innovative and green-based telecom delivery platforms based on solar and wind power suppliers, subscriber traffic based power controls, natural heat dissipation and green based handsets. These innovations expand network coverage, reduce transmission resources and increase energy efficiency thus lowering TCO significantly by 30 to 40 percent.

Huawei' s core green value firmly states the usage of renewable sources of energy like solar for powering the next generation telecom networks, resulting in the next generation base-station which will propel the rural telecom growth thus delinking from the gas guzzling generators, where there is no electricity grid. This reduces carbon emissions dramatically while providing better broadband services to the customers.

Through its world renowned, "Green Communications and Green World" initiative, Huawei is committed to ensuring harmony between technological development, environmental protection and economic benefits. Environmental protection is incorporated into Huawei' s end-to-end solutions covering base-stations, equipment rooms, and transmission and supply chains.

Building India with Indian talent

Huawei has a long-term commitment to India that is shown through our extensive hiring of superior local employees. The localization drive includes local R&D, local sources, local service delivery, local manufacturing and more. Currently more than 3200 Indian high-tech professionals are employed in Huawei' s India R&D centre and various operations across the country, which represents about 85% of localization rate of the total workforce in Huawei India.

Huawei' s commitment to the country' s telecom industry stems from the fact that the R&D centre in Bangalore set up in 1999 is its largest overseas R&D centre with 200 million USD of investment to date. Huawei is continuously expanding its R&D campus building in Bangalore. As a CMMI Level 5 certified organization, the India R&D centre is uniquely positioned to develop products and solutions not only for Indian market, but for global markets as well. Globally, Huawei invests more than 10% of its revenues in R&D, and more than 10% on the pre-R&D.

Long-term social pact with India "Golden Pipe" initiative

Over the past few years, the rapidly growing telecom industry has greatly facilitated global economic growth. But in many developing economies, due to low telecom penetration, far fewer economic benefits trickle down to the population living at the "bottom of the economic pyramid". International research has revealed that, there is strong link between the economic development of societies and increasing demands for mobile connectivity. Huawei' s core corporate philosophy centers on developing a long-term sustainable society in markets that it operates. In addition to being a successful enterprise, Huawei is also committed to being a globally responsible corporate citizen.

Huawei offers innovative communication solutions, in order to help people around the world gain access to Information Society and continually strives to carry out responsibilities as a corporate citizen. At Huawei, there is an emphasis on the empowerment of the socially underprivileged children through education and development. Corporate Social Responsibility is more of a way of life at Huawei.

Some key initiatives in India include, helping the underprivileged girls develop learning and life skills through reputed NGOs such as Deepalaya, computer donation to the rural schools, scholarship program in partnership with IIIT-Bangalore, relief efforts in cash, telecom equipment and kind to Tsunami victims, etc. Huawei is firmly committed to rural child development programs and a new initiative to sponsor the broadband connectivity to schools an a large scale has been taken up. With these strategies, contributions made to India' s growth, Huawei is all set to achieve the "golden pipe" broadband dream of the masses, thus propelling the economy and society to greater heights.

India-future forever

As a strategic partner to many top tier telecom service providers world-wide, Huawei India is committed to the long-term development and growth of India, by providing safe and secured telecom products and solutions, based on international standards. Huawei is grateful to the Indian regulatory and policy makers for creating a level-playing field and supportive infrastructure to all the global telecom vendors, based on the basic tenets of international business and economic cooperation. Together, Huawei and its numerous partners will achieve a win-win success for the development of telecommunications industry and the sustainable and inclusive growth of Indian economy.
