As mobile services have been quickly developing worldwide, they have become the fastest growing part in the revenues and profits of telecom carriers. However, such quick developments have brought many serious challenges to the traditional TDM/ATM bearer mode, for example the transition from 2G networks to 3G networks, the release of new services (especially new data and video services), and the evolution to IMS and FMC (Fixed-Mobile Convergence). The TDM bearer mode can hardly meet many new service requirements, for example the quick increase of system bandwidth, N x N interconnections, and best service bearing in multi-service systems.
