Algeria Telecom Mobile Launches UMTS Pilot Network with Huawei

(27 December 2004) ALGERIA Algeria Telecom Mobile, the first mobile operator in Algeria, held a press conference on December 15 to announce the launch of its UMTS pilot network, constructed by Huawei Technologies.

Mr. Belhamdi, President of Algeria Telecom Mobile, presided the press conference. Over 80 guests, including the Minister of Algeria Telecommunication and Posts, the President of Algeria Telecom, the Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, as well as members of the press and media, attended the press conference. Mr. Belhamdi highly praised the cooperation between Huawei and telecom operators, and hoped that Huawei would bring more of its state-of-the-art products and services to Algeria.

Mr. Li Shenzhuo, Director of Sales for Middle East and North Africa at Huawei, was very pleased that Algeria Telecom Mobile chose Huawei as the telecom provider's first partner to construct this 3G network. Mr. Li hoped that this high-quality UMTS network will benefit Algeria Telecom Mobile and he expects a long-term strategic partnership between the two companies.

The UMTS pilot network is the first of its kind in Algeria that is constructed solely by Huawei. The network covers many areas in the country's capital city Algiers, including the Office of the President, the headquarters of Algeria Telecom Mobile, and the International Exhibition Center. The UMTS pilot network provides basic mobile services such as voice, video phone, and SMS, and also multimedia services such as MMS, streaming, and pocket TV.
