[PLANO, Texas – 27 October 2009] Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today delivered a keynote speech at the 2009 Pearl River Delta (PRD) International Forum on Innovation and Intellectual Property hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Guangzhou, China. This forum was officiated by U.S. Ambassador to China, Mr. Jon Huntsman. Mr. Song Liuping, Chief Legal Officer and Vice President of Huawei, illustrated how companies can leverage customer-centric innovation to protect intellectual property rights and help customers achieve business success.
Mr. Song said that Huawei' s growth in recent years has been driven by Huawei' s strong R&D resources that allow Huawei to rapidly respond to customer needs. Meanwhile, Huawei is actively involved in telecoms industry standardization and technology sharing to maximize customer benefits and value.
"Huawei is fully committed towards building a harmonious business environment through the respect and enforcement of intellectual property rights," said Mr. Song Liuping, vice president and chief legal officer of Huawei. "We achieve this by leveraging our R&D resources and innovation through actively collaboration with leading international industry bodies that establish open standards for the information technology and telecommunications sector."
Huawei' s IPR department was set up in 1995 and now has over 300 patent specialists and engineers and IP attorneys specializing in copyright, trademark and IP licensing. Huawei has applied for 35,773 patents, as of December 2008. According to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Huawei was ranked No. 1 with 1,737 applications in 2008.
