Broadband Stimulus
Background Information
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law on February 17, 2009. The Broadband Initiatives funded in the Act are intended to accelerate broadband deployment in unserved, underserved, and rural areas and to strategic institutions that are likely to create jobs or provide significant public benefits.
The second round of application acceptance begins August 14th, 2009. Funding is available and distributed through the Federal Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). There is limited time to initiate an application and these programs are looking for projects that can be completed within 2-3 year timeframe.
The RUS Broadband Initiative Program (BIP) focuses on the development of broadband access in rural areas, while the NTIA Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) has a slightly broader goal of developing networks for education, public safety and economic growth in underserved communities.
