Challenges
Smart water meter solution is established with the goal of replacing manual meter reading and reducing labor cost, checking pipeline pressure to prevent potential issues, identifying and locating pipeline leakage by comparing pipeline traffic over different periods, and implementing time-of-use (TOU) pricing to improve water usage. Huawei LiteOS-assisted Smart Water Meter Solution implements smart water meter reading for water companies based on NB-IoT technology.
To reduce operating expense (OPEX) it is easier to replace water meters than add power cables. Therefore, terminal devices are commonly powered by battery, rather than from power cables. The overall system must be designed for lower power consumption to ensure each battery in a single device can last 5 to 10 years. The main challenges are as follows:

Simplified system components

Most smart water meters use a microcontroller unit (MCU) to run meter algorithms and applications. It is a great challenge to effectively integrate the data processing and transmission components into a chip, such as an NB-IoT chip, to reduce power consumption.

Lightweight system applications

Another challenge for the basic platform such as OS is to achieve low power consumption of the entire system by streamlining software design, achieving high-performance service algorithms and simplified software, and reducing power consumption, CPU overhead, and memory usage.

Solution
Huawei LiteOS-assisted Smart Water Meter Solution is designed with the integration of Huawei LiteOS and NB-IoT chips. Huawei LiteOS-assisted Smart Water Meter Solution cuts unnecessary power consumption of MCU units. The extremely low software power consumption is achieved by continually building a lightweight platform that optimizes algorithms and applications of smart water meters.
