TELUS & Huawei Joint Innovation Boosts HSPA capacity for TELUS Subscribers

Represents first Global HSPA Microcell Deployment

[Markham, Ontario, February 9, 2012]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and TELUS, today announced the first global HSPA Microcell commercial deployment. Working in conjunction with existing HSPA Macro Cells in Red Deer Alberta, the initial deployment is designed to assess the additional capacity and network performance provided when deployed at street level in a downtown urban setting. This solution stems from engineering Research and Development conducted through the Joint Innovation Centre that TELUS established with Huawei last year.

"This Joint Innovation Centre further demonstrates the unique value and commitment that the TELUS and Huawei partnership is evolving technology to for the benefit of our customers," said Eros Spadotto, TELUS’ Executive Vice President of Technology Strategy and Operations. "With this innovation, we can offer more consistent and speedy data connections for our customers."

Huawei’s HSPA Micro Cell solution will enable TELUS to achieve increased wireless bandwidth using existing fibre backhaul facilities, effectively improving network efficiencies through the extension of the company’s wireline network.

"The rapidly increasing demand for mobile broadband services has opened the door for innovation in the wireless market and Huawei is excited to work alongside TELUS to deliver unique solutions to its customers," said Sean Yang, President of Huawei Canada. "This deployment is another milestone in our effort to expand our work in the Canadian mobile broadband access market through strengthening our long-standing relationships with leading service providers such as TELUS."

This announcement is the latest milestone in a growing partnership that began in 2008. Last year, as part of Huawei and TELUS’s commitment to continuous innovation, the two companies established the Huawei-TELUS Innovation Centre for Enterprise Cloud Services at Carleton University in Ottawa, and officially announced the research projects with the university’s top researchers and engineering students in January 2012.
