Challenges

Channeling the digital flood requires ever greater network architectural complexity and capacity. Multi-RAT, multi-band & multi-frequency networking with heterogeneous architecture is widely considered the proper response to this challenge. However, operational efficiency and economics for these complicated networks is a primary concern for operators, as is end-user experience for different RATs.

Our Solution

At the 2nd SON Forum 2011 in London, Huawei released its industry-first multi-mode and multi-layer SON solution (SingleSON). We firmly believe this solution to be the future of the industry.

SingleSON can manage multi-mode and multi-layer networking automatically, which will improve O&M efficiency and ensure smooth technological evolution. In other words, SingleSON delivers efficiency, experience and evolution.

Efficiency: SingleSON improves O&M efficiency throughout the network lifecycle:

Network deployment:

  • One site visit, one transmission plan, one certificate and one security link;
  • Reduced manual parameter configuration, which speeds up deployment;

Network optimization:

  • Fewer drive tests through its MDT (Minimization of Drive Tests) feature;
  • Zero manual neighbor configuration through Inter-RAT ANR (Automatic Neighbor Relations);

Network maintenance:

  • Improved cell recovery efficiency (from days to minutes) through CODC (Cell outage detection and compensation);
  • Reduced power consumption (5-10%) through Inter-RAT coordinated shutdown;

Experience: SingleSON generates Multi-RAT/Multi-layer synergy to improve the user experience:

  • Adaptive ICIC (Inter-cell interference coordination) increases cell edge throughput and improves user experience at the cell edge;
  • Inter-RAT MLB (Mobility load balance) increases system throughput and guarantees user experience for different RATs;

Evolution: SingleSON enables evolution from LTE SON to Inter-RAT SON, and will further support HetNet SON for GigaSite and SmallCell solutions.

Applications & Benefits

Huawei completed the industry’s first SON test in 2008, and has deployed numerous live demos and tests units for operators in Europe and Asia since then. Commercially-proven SON features include PnP and ANR.
