Smart QoS for MBB

Challenges

Operators face two QoS challenges when it comes to MBB. First, operators lack effective methods to restrict the activities of really heavy data users. A common phenomenon on any mobile data network is that of 20% of the users generating 80% or more of the traffic. Moreover, without a tiered SLA in place, high-value users and services will not receive priority for network resources, and thus their experience is always negatively affected by others.

Our Solutions

Huawei’s Smart Qos solution helps operators achieve differentiated QoS in three steps.

First, operators need to identify the services. Huawei’s smart QoS solution supports three flexible DPI (deep packet inspection) deployment models, various levels of inspection, and an independent signature database to help operators identify unknown service types.

Second, based on the awareness of service types, operators need a powerful and comprehensive QoS policy. Huawei PCRF (Policy and Charging Rules Function) can decide policy with ten triggers flexibly, and support 12 typical scenarios including FUP (fair usage policy) and family quota sharing.

Finally, the network should be able to execute the QoS policy in an excellent way. Here, the radio access network is the key. Huawei has adopted four wireless scheduling algorithms, two traffic control mechanisms and two levels of traffic shaping to assure the QoS execution.

In summary, by precise service identification, powerful policy decisions and effective policy execution, Huawei QoS solution can help operators realize differentiated users and services with tiered SLA. As a result, both bandwidth efficiency and customer experience are enhanced.

Benefits and Applications

To consistently enhance bandwidth efficiency and provide superior customer experience, Nextel Peru adopted Huawei’s Smart QoS solution in 2010 FUP was deployed in a way that when a user’s data quota expired, the network would automatically decrease the allocated speed to avoid excessive usage. In addition, with QoS control at service level. for example, a real-time service was granted a higher priority over browsing. The solution has effectively supported Nextel’s future growth in mobile broadband.

Smart QoE for MBB

Challenges

Operators face significant QoE challenges in MBB that arise from gaps between measured network quality and the experience of users. The root reason is that network KPIs and QoE have yet to be mapped together. Added to that challenge is the lack of mechanisms, procedures and tools to continuously monitor, operate and report QoE indicators.

Our Solutions

Huawei Smart QoE Assurance solution makes QoE evaluable, measurable and traceable.

First, compliant with industry standards, the solution develops service modeling which establishes mapping between KPIs and QoE. Currently the service modeling covers seven typical MBB services.

Second, by using abundant data collection methods and tools, we can generate enough data from the networks, even multi-vendor networks. The data can be used for not only real-time QoE monitoring, but also dynamic benchmarks for comparison.

Finally, based on profound Internet service understanding and abundant professional experience, we can locate QoE problems precisely and optimize accordingly.

To constantly enhance QoE for MBB services, coordination between QoE and QoS solutions (as illustrated in the diagram) is vital. As shown in the grey cycle, when service quality declines, QoE analyzes the cause, and if it’s because of network congestion, QoE will trigger QoS to schedule for optimization. After scheduling is finished, QoS asks QoE to measure whether service quality has improved or not. If not, QoE will require QoS to re-schedule again. The outer brown cycle shows that deep QoE optimization may lead to a long-term QoS policy upgrade. For example, if we expand some sites or change site locations, the QoS policy should be upgraded accordingly.

Benefits and Applications

Huawei’s Smart QoE Assurance solution has served Saudi Arabia’s Mobily, which runs the world’s busiest mobile data network. Smart QoE is embedded in Huawei’s E-iNOC solution, a key component of Huawei’s managed services, with a focus on end-user QoE and KQI (key quality index). This solution has enabled Mobily to successfully transform to the ‘subscriber-and-service-centric’ OAM mode, and attain customer satisfaction.
