Challenges
The fast-growing mobile broadband service challenges the legacy mobile backhaul in three major areas:
First is site acquisition and usage. To support bigger capacity and richer mobile broadband services, the mobile network requires new type of air interfaces and base stations like Femto and Pico. With smaller coverage of an individual base station, a large number of new sites need to be deployed to ensure sound coverage and capacity. Site acquisition is becoming a key challenge especially in urban areas.
Second relates to the overlapped investment. As GSM, UMTS and LTE have different interfaces including E1/T1, ATM and Ethernet, corresponding backhaul technologies include microwave, SDH/PDH, PTN and router. In addition, with Gbit bandwidth, operators can resolve the bandwidth pressure through Wi-Fi offload in hotspot area.
