Security Advisory - Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in Some Videoconference Products

The VP9660, VP9650, and VP9630 are Multipoint Control Units (MCUs). As the core devices in videoconferencing systems, they provide endpoint access and conferencing functions. The three devices use the same software, namely, HUAWEI VP9660.

The RSE6500 is a multimedia video conferencing server with support for conference recording, live streaming, and on-demand streaming.

Some Huawei videoconference products have a buffer overflow vulnerability. An attacker may send malformed packets to the devices, causing buffer overflow and the execution of arbitrary code. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-05054)

This vulnerability has been assigned Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-5234.

Attackers can exploit this vulnerability to perform remote code execution.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 9.3 (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C)

Temporal Score: 7.7 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

1. Prerequisite:

The attacker has access to the network of the affected device;

2. Attacking procedure:

When a certain service is enabled, the attacker sends malformed packets to the affected device, which does not verify a parameter when copying the packets. As a result, buffer overflow occurs, causing the execution of arbitrary code.

No valid workaround is available for affected products. Nevertheless, customers can deploy Huawei NGFWs (Next Generation Firewall) or data center firewalls, and upgrade the IPS signature database to the latest version (IPS_H20011000_2016060100) released on June 1, 2016 to detect and defend against malformed packets vulnerability exploits initiated from the Internet.
