Core network: All media, all services "one core"

In the area of infrastructure, in the core network, Huawei has an evolution strategy that features a single core based on our All-IP concept. We are also a leader in carrier-grade IP, the whole concept of making sure that the quality is carrier grade. Because of our unified platform, we can effectively reduce operating expenses as well. All media and all services can be handled by a single core. The underlying technology, ATCA, allows for a wide range of applications of high reliability. There are blades on the ATCA platform, which can change functions with only a software upgrade. For instance, a blade is a mobile softwitch today; tomorrow it may be changed into an IMS mobile AGCF. A single blade that has all IMS components on it as part of a standalone HD video conference service may migrate to a full IMS core after adding more blades and software modules. Thus investment protection is effectively ensured, and the operators are able to quickly react to new requirements for the network.

All-IP transformation also means the ability to handle the move from TDM to All-IP, in the data core network, the ability to move from passively reacting to demands to being able to intelligently deal with requests. A good example of this is innovative uses of the core network technology where the users can select for themselves where to spend their money. We believe that users will be willing to pay if the extra service can bring them more value. For example, a movie lover won"t mind paying 50 cents more to get the priority channel and real time streaming for movie downloads from the mobile website. There are substantial new opportunities as more intelligence is added into the core network and the other parts of the radio access.

As mobile service and the core network become increasingly important, reliability and capabilities become critical. Geographical distribution for resilience, which is built into our core network, renders high reliability of close to six nines. The advantage of moving towards commercial technology is apparent when considering footprint, total cost of ownership and the green factors. It reduces footprint to 1/10, and saves huge amount of power and cost of ownership.
