Service: applications on demands

In the software arena, we have created our Huawei software company as we view software as a distinct business. The new company' s focus is on applications on demands, provision of the capabilities that people need. For example, for calls made to your mobile operators addressing different issues, you are likely to be going through a Huawei call center system. They are different areas, but they are all built on top of a common platform. For billing systems, we have unified platform; for consumer and enterprise applications, we have a unified service development platform (SDP). All of these run on a common set of hardware, which is also built on the ATCA concept as the core network is.

The strength in software is that we are able to provide these services on demand. We also can provide what the operators expect in application stores, so the operators are able to get revenue from providing applications to the end users, able to provide personalization, and multiple channels for delivery. We are serving more than 80 operators and over 1,000 partners are working with us in this area. In the SDP arena alone, we have around 1,000 R&D engineers.

The model we' ve adopted for this is called "store front and factory in the back". It is related to having a factory that can produce standardized components and then stores that can modify them to meet the needs of particular customers. That is the philosophy in our software arena, and because the store is located with our customers, they are able to have easier conversation and more precise understanding. The engineers we have placed in "the store" can then modify the products as they come out of "the factory" to have exactly the right fit. The total R&D headcount for our software group is about 9,000 people now. We have 12 development factories and a number of stores that are close to our customers.
